Mark Davis Bradley

Mark Davis Bradley, Age 68 of Forest VA, passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on May 22, 2017. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Janet Harris Bradley, daughters Kimberly J. Bradley of Lake Worth, FL, and Gina L. Fox (Milton) of Forest VA. Mark is also survived by his brother-in-law, Gary L. Harris (Sharon) of Salisbury NC and niece Cathryn F. Harris of Forest VA. Mark was also blessed to have many relatives from Indiana and Ohio and longtime friends in his life that meant the world to him. He loved life and being surrounded by his inner circle and loved ones. Mark was born on April 24, 1949 in Englewood, NJ. He was the only child of the late Leslie W. and Mary Ellen Bradley, formerly of Indianapolis, IN and then Melbourne, FL following his dad’s retirement from IBM Company. Mark was retired from the Central Virginia Training Center and a 1971 Graduate of Lynchburg College. He was an avid sports fan, especially of the New York Yankees. He loved to participate in bowling, softball, and golf. He also enjoyed playing guitar with the “Olde Stuff Band”. Making music with his band family was his passion. A very special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and staff of the Colorectal Unit of the Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland OH, and especially the doctors and nurses of Centra Hospice for their loving care. A celebration of Mark’s life will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, 2017 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home. Gary McKendree Cheatham, 82, of Lynchburg, Va., passed away peacefully at Lynchburg General Hospital Wednesday, May 24, 2017. He was a son of the late Thomas “Alec” Alexander Cheatham and Irene Jones Cheatham. Gary proudly served in the United States National Guard. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. He retired from the Richmond Times Dispatch where he was a state circulation manager. He was dedicated to his family and he loved them very much. Gary had an endless taste for adventure and was always ready to help anybody who was in need. Surviving are his wife, Katy Cheatham of Lynchburg; daughter, Michelle Ellinwood (Robert S) of Bedford County; step-children, Michael W. Spencer of Amawalk, N.Y., Virginia Bowling of Madison Heights, Michael Grant of Madison Heights, Terry Grant of Lynchburg, Carolyn Tyree of Evington, and Phillip Grant of Rustburg; eight step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; cousins, Dan Cheatham of Brookneal, June Cheatham (Hunter) of Richmond, Gilbert Cheatham of Kentucky, Robert Garbee, and Tommy Garbee; nieces and nephews, Ricky Cheatham of Gladys, Sandy Maranto of Texas, Betsy Cheatham of Lynchburg, Mickey Cheatham of Gladys, Susan Steadman of Gladys, Sarah Isaac of Gladys, Mary Beth Johnson of Chester, Tom Harvey of Boston, Ma. and John Harvey, Jr. of New River Valley; and his special canine companion, Tia. Shirley Floyd Gowen, of Madison Heights died Wednesday, May 24, 2017. She was the devoted wife of Thomas Franklin Gowen for 56 years. Born June 16, 1937, in Amherst County, Shirley was a daughter of the late William Elton Floyd and the late Eunice Jennings Floyd. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Steve Kendall Gowen. Shirley is survived by her daughter-in-law, Glenda Gowen-Nixon and her husband, Alan, of Elon; three grandchildren, Nicholas, Justin, and Olivia; two sisters, Madeline Mawyer, of Amherst, and Elsie Jessie, of Lynchburg; three brothers, Cecil Floyd and his wife, Eloise, of Lynchburg, James Floyd and his wife, Lillian, of Monroe, and Leroy Floyd, of Madison Heights; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Monroe, having served as treasurer there. She was retired from Nations Bank, where she worked for 42 years. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2017, at First Baptist Church of Monroe. Raymond L. Beale (aka “Potch” to his grandchildren), Age 79, of Washington, NC, formerly of Rocky Mount, NC, Roanoke, VA, and Lynchburg, VA, went to be with the Lord on May 26, 2017. Mr. Beale was born on August 28, 1937, in Lynchburg, VA, to the late Norris H and Mildred D. Beale. He graduated from Brookville High School in Lynchburg, served in the Navy reserve, and retired from Pepsi Bottling Ventures. Mr. Beale was a former member of the Old Forest Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg and Shenandoah Baptist Church in Roanoke. Most recently, he was a member of Sunset Ave Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, NC. He also enjoyed being a member of the Gideons Internationals. Survivors include his wife of 57 ½ years, Delores H. Beale, three daughters, Karen Beale of Virginia Beach, Robin Privette and husband Terry of Virginia Beach, Amy Craft and husband Brandon of Washington, NC, and four grandchildren, Alex and Skyler Privette, Logan and Savanna Craft, a sister Lois B. Williams of Appomattox, VA, a sister-in-law, Phyllis H. Padgett of Virginia Beach, two brothers-in-laws, John E Hunt of Virginia Beach, Douglas J. Hunt of Lynchburg, VA, two nieces, and five nephews. The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive in Lynchburg, VA, on Saturday, June 3, 2017, from 11:00 to 12:30 pm.  A funeral service will be held 12:30 PM Saturday June 3, 2017 in the Tharp Chapel. Richard Ward Jett

Richard Ward Jett, 76, of Lynchburg, Va. went to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, May 26, 2017 after being diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy in January. Richard was born in Roanoke to the late Thornton Ward Jett and Elva Fisher Jett. He was predeceased by his first wife, Esther ‘Boots’ Jett, and infant twin brother and two infant sisters. Richard is survived by his wife, Beth; his son, Steve and his wife, Cheryl of Heathsville, Va.; his daughter, Sandra Goodman and her husband, Kenny of Forest, Va.; his sister, Carolyn Jett, of Lynchburg; three step-sons, Jeff Blair of Charlottesville, Va., Jon Blair and his wife Barb of Greenville, S.C., Joe Blair and his wife, Lee Anne of Spring Hill, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren, Tristan and Logan Goodman, Esther Chance Jett, Conley, Brynn, Trevor, Megan, Cade, Jude, Quinn, Tate, and Annalise Blair. Richard graduated from Jefferson High School in 1958, from National Business College in 1960, and he served in the United States Army National Guard for six years. Richard worked at Kroger for 14 years and was a director of sales for Gerber Foods for 23 years. In 1998 Richard began working for his church, Timberlake Baptist, as a business manager until January 2007. He then transitioned to Visitation Pastor from 2007 until January 2017. During his visitation ministry, Richard was able to witness, and provide encouragement and comfort to numerous families and always looked forward to sharing the word of God and offering a smile to those that he was fortunate enough to be able to visit. Richard accepted Christ as his savior at the age of 12 at Grandin Court Baptist Church in Roanoke under the preaching of Pastor Frank G. Voight. Richard has been a member of Timberlake Baptist Church for over 50 years. During this time he was involved in the development of Timberlake Christian Schools and served on the school board for many years. Richard faithfully sang in the choir, served as a Deacon, served as church treasurer and was active in the Gideons for 33 years. Richard loved giving support to young people involved in missions trips. He also supported several needy children in Burundi, Africa and Nepal thru his support of Allow the Children Ministries. Richard was a humble, yet generous, loving, godly man who never met a stranger. His serving nature and sense of humor enhanced and brightened the lives of many. Richard’s faith and devotion to sharing God’s word was evident in every aspect of his life. She was born August 4, 1944, daughter of the late Henry Lewis Mitchell and the late Erma White Mitchell. Randolph “Hunt” Irvin Austin, Sr. departed this life on Saturday, May 27, 2017. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Austin; his father, Charles Bailey; sister, Della Mae Briscoe; uncle, Harry T. Austin. Left to cherish Hunt’s memory are his wife of 48 years, Peggy Smith Austin; two sons, Randolph Irvin Austin, Jr. and wife, Karen, and Shawn Brown; one daughter, Deidre A. Rose and husband, Joseph; one sister, Lillian A. Jones and husband, Larry; two grandchildren, Cameryn Austin and Tyus Brown; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service in the Vietnam War. Hunt was a member of The Black Moses Club. He was a Dunbar High School graduate in the class of 1965. He coached little league basketball for R.S. Payne. He was an outdoorsman and was an avid collector of guns and knives. Hunt loved his family and always knew how to have a good time. A funeral service will be held Saturday, June 3, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Rivermont Baptist Church with Pastor Byron J. Richard Shreve Birch, Jr.

Richard S. Birch, Jr. , 91, of Lynchburg, Va. died on Saturday, May 27, 2017, at Westminster Canterbury Lynchburg.  He was the loving and devoted husband for nearly 71 years to his high school sweetheart Patricia Cooper Birch. Dick was born on May 16, 1926, in Burlington, N.J., and was the son and only child of the late Richard S. Birch, Sr. and Catharine Beugless Birch. After attending Staunton Military Academy, and graduating from the Episcopal Academy in Overbrook, Pa., Dick spent 2 years in the United States Navy, being honorably discharged in 1946. Travelling across the country to attend the University of California at Berkeley, he earned his electrical engineering degree in 1948. Heading back east with his beloved wife Pat, Dick started his engineering career with the Philco Corp. in Philadelphia. He moved his growing family to Florida in 1950 where he worked for several electronic and communications firms until starting his own company in the Miami area. In 1966, Dick and family moved to Lynchburg, beginning a career with G.E. that included engineering and management positions until retirement at the end of 1987. In retirement, he and Pat enjoyed travelling throughout the U.S. and many interesting parts of the world.  Most of these excursions are well documented in his high quality and extremely informative videos that became a pastime that Dick immersed himself in with the enthusiasm that characterized any project he undertook. Living in Westminster Canterbury Lynchburg for the past 15 years, he diligently volunteered in various capacities on the Resident’s Council, including serving as Chair of the Council, and was a strong supporter of the Westminster community. In addition to his wife Pat, Dick is survived by four children, Richard S. Birch III and his wife Janet, of Fernandina Beach, FL:  Robert A. Birch and his wife Joan, of Coral Gables, FL: Randy H. Birch and his wife Mioara, of Jacksonville, FL: and Cathy J. Lawhorn and husband Rick Remillard of Sturgeon Bay, WI. Additionally, he is survived by 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and numerous friends that he so much enjoyed. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at Westminster Canterbury’s Weissert Chapel, 501 VES Road. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Barnabas Episcopal Church or Westminster Canterbury’s Fellowship Fund.

Robert B. Beger, of Daleville, passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, after succumbing to pancreatic cancer on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Chicago, IL on Mar. 30, 1947 the son of the late Earl William Beger and the late Inez Maurine Alderman Beger. Bob grew up in Chicago and was drafted into the US ARMY at age 19. Bob served our country honorably in Vietnam from 1966-1968 as a Specialist 4th Class. Upon leaving the ARMY, he worked construction in Chicago from 1968-1976. Bob moved to Roanoke, VA in 1976 and worked, as a conductor, for Norfolk-Southern Railroad until his retirement in April 2017. “enjoyed working with all you railroad guys.” Bob is survived his two sons, Tyler William Beger and Chandler Robert Beger; and by their beautiful mother, Karen Clark Beger. “I was always blessed with a great family, and am very proud of my two sons.” Services and burial will be private. John Raymond Soos, 91, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, May 28, 2017. He was the husband of the late Nancy Reed Soos. John was born February 14, 1926 in Pocahontas, Va., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Soos. John honorably served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was retired as laboratory technician with the Department of Agriculture. He is survived by his son, John Michael Soos and his wife, Cindy, of Huddleston. A memorial service for John will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at New Hope Baptist Church, 8270 E. Lynchburg-Salem Turnpike (460 West) in Goode, with Pastor Don Rice officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. William Christian Smith, 87, of Forest, VA and formerly of Grantville, PA and Palm Coast, FL, passed away at his residence on Sunday, May 28, 2017. He was the son of the late Homer D. and Blanche K. Smith. He was also predeceased in death by two brothers, Edward and Robert Smith and one son, Gene E. Smith. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Y. Smith of the residence; two sons, Carl W. Smith (Bonnie) of Forest, VA and Terry L. Smith (Lydia) of Lebanon, PA; one brother, Harold Smith (Lucetta) of Palmyra, PA and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mr. Smith served his country during the Korean War as an Army MP.  He was a former employee of Carvel Ice Cream Supermarket and TRW, both in Harrisburg, PA. Mr. Smith enjoyed fishing, Wii bowling and Nascar racing during his retirement. He attended Mt. View United Methodist Church in Forest, VA.  On May 28, 2017, Dorothy Mae Barbour Stanley, affectionately known as “Sister Barbour” departed this life at Lynchburg General Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.  She will be remembered for her laugh, her smile, and her quick wit. Dorothy was born August 9, 1935, in Lynchburg, Va. to the late Theodore R. and Gertrude Elliott Barbour.  She was predeceased by her husband, William Stanley, brother Theodore Barbour, Jr., sister Virginia Barbour, brother-in-law William Hicks, nephew Melvin Barbour, Jr. and devoted niece Beatrice Barbour.  Left to cherish her memory are her son Vincent Barbour, Sr. (Consuella) of Evington, Va., daughter Virginia Williams and a lovingly devoted son-in-law, Bobby Williams, Sr. of Lynchburg, Va. Survivors also include her brother Overton Barbour (Vivian) of Texas, devoted brothers Melvin Barbour, Sr. (Evelyn), Aubrey Barbour, Sr. (Helen), Robert Barbour, Sr. (Janice), a very devoted sister-in-law Elizabeth Barbour, all of Lynchburg, and sisters Hattie Hicks of Forest, Va. and Josephine Johnson of Reston, Va. She is further survived by her grandchildren Consuella Barbour, Dorothy Thomas, Vincent Barbour, Jr., and step-grandchildren Bobby Jr, Joanne and Vincent Williams, as well as great grandchildren Malcolm, Meghan, Nickolas, Gabriella, Leah, Ashley and Viankah. She is also survived by devoted nephews Freddy Barbour, Sr., Donnie Brown, Albert Jennings, Sr. and Robert Barbour, Jr., a devoted niece Tiffani Barbour, as well as many other family and friends she made through the years during her tenure at Colonial Hills Golf Club.  Mary Rose Connelly, 88, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017. She was the widow of the late Thomas Richard Connelly. Mary Rose was born in Elmira, N.Y., on September 26, 1928. She was formerly employed at Western Union Telegraph Company during World War II and had earned her North Carolina Real Estate License in 1979. She is survived by her sons: Francis Connelly and wife Cindy of Lanexa, VA, Walter Connelly and wife Maria of Manhattan, NY, and Daniel Connelly of Lynchburg VA, her sisters: Rita Wood of Seminole, FL, Patricia Todd and husband Charles of Elmira, NY, Kathleen Stermer of Elmira, NY, Madeline Jones of Stuart, FL, and Joan Dins and her husband Bill of Medford, OR, four grandchildren: Isobel and Amelia Connelly of Manhattan, NY, Nick Carter of Virginia, and Amanda Carter of Missouri, two great-grandchildren, Calab and Rayanna Carter both of Virginia. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents Gertrude and Walter Lorgan, a brother Walter Lorgan, Jr., and a sister Eileen Sophia. Melinda Denise Ramsey, 45, of Lynchburg, passed Tuesday, May 30, 2017. Born Wednesday, February 16, 1972 in Lynchburg, Melinda was a daughter of Bryant E. Ramsey and Joyce Rogers Ramsey, of Madison Heights. Melinda was preceded in death by a sister, Dianne Ramsey. In addition to her mom and dad, Melinda is survived by her fiancé, Mike Capps, of Lynchburg; a daughter, Mandy (Burks) Campbell and her husband, Logan Campbell, of Madison Heights; a son, Michael Sperberg, of Bedford; three grandchildren, Khloe, Arabella, and Cayden; a brother, Rick Ramsey and his wife, Jeannie, of Forest; a sister, Sharon Ramsey, of Madison Heights; Mike’s mom and dad, Jessie and Darnell Capps, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Melinda loved her children and her family. She was a head strong person, who did things her way. She lived for today and did not care about yesterday or what could happen tomorrow. She always put the needs of others first, and was known for her ability to make people laugh. She loved doing crafts, country music and her pets. Charles Thomas Miles Sr.

Charles Thomas Miles, Sr. passed away on May 31, 2017. He was born May 27, 1938 of the late Nelson and Connie Miles of Evington, Virginia. Charles operated the Rustburg Esso, later becoming Rustburg Auto. The station remained a corner institution of talk, tall tales, drink, gas and mechanics for over 40 years. Charles lived his life full throttle and always did it his way, not necessarily the easy way. He has many passions, the first being farming "The Ward Place" followed by fishing, hunting, gardening, traveling and perfecting the art of BBQ. There is no question he mastered curing the perfect Virginia Country Ham. In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by son, Charles T. "Tommy" Miles Jr., and sister, Sallie Henry. Charles is survived by daughter Julie Miles of White Post, her mother, Kay Miles Montgomery, a sister Anna Meekins of Virginia Beach, a brother Nelson Miles Jr and wife Debbie of Evington, companion Josephine Wells of Rustburg, and grandchildren Whitney Miles and her fiancé, Joshua Field of Lynchburg, Summer Miles of White Post and Savannah Miles of Rustburg. The family extends deep gratitude to Charlie Droog, a solid friend to Charles, and to Charles'  caretaker Melissa Stapleton. Charles' last request was to see his sister Anna in Va. Beach and against all reasonable measure Melissa made it happen. Charles got to go one more time. Memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2017 at Rustburg Baptist Church, Rustburg, Va. with Rev. Roger Roller officiating. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall after the service. In lieu for flowers, contributions may be made to Rustburg Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 206, Rustburg, Va. 24588 or Centra Hospice, 2097 Langhorne Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24501. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.

Jane Widgeon, 72, of Goode, went to be with Jesus, Thursday, June 1, 2017. She was the wife of the late David Jennings Widgeon, Jr. Jane was born in Harrisonburg on April 24, 1945 a daughter of the late Benjamin Wesley Johnson and Jane Steel Johnson. Jane worked as a Librarian with the Lynchburg City School system, was an active member of Forest Road United Methodist Church, and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was survived by her two sons: David Jennings Widgeon, III and his wife Angela of Christiansburg, and Matt Keith Widgeon of Roanoke, and two grandchildren, Benjamin Guy Widgeon and Evelyn Jane Widgeon, her siblings: David Johnson and his wife Marilyn of N.C., Ruth Miles of VA, Dan Johnson and his wife Sis of N.C., and Dottie Toney and her husband Richard of GA, her mother-in-law, Annette Widgeon of VA, her two sisters-in-law, Patricia Sturgis and her husband Jimmy of VA, Connie Campbell and her husband William of VA, and cousin Lynn Brockwell and his wife Donna of N.C. and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 5, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg. A Celebration of Jane’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Forest Road United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Price officiating.
