Oscar James Lewis

Oscar James Lewis, 86, of Lynchburg, Va., departed this life on Saturday, July 11, 2020 at his home. Oscar was born July 6, 1934 in Amherst County, Va. He was the son of the late Rev. James Lewis, Sr. and Susie Virginia Anderson Lewis. Oscar briefly attended Amherst County Public Schools, before picking up a trade as a concrete finisher for Mayflower Brothers, Inc. Oscar enjoyed working with his hands-building decks for family and friends; as well as picking up odd jobs doing handy work here and there. He also loved to sing and was a proud member of the Trying Gospel Tears. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Lewis Preston and brothers, Haywood Lewis and Melvin Lewis. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Mona Lewis of, 26 years; and stepdaughter, Stephanie McKenzie; siblings, Wilbert Lewis, Rev. Dorn H. Lewis, Preston Lewis (Donna) and Grayling Lewis (Jeanette) all of Lynchburg/Madison Heights, Va., Barbara L. Petty of Fayetteville, N.C., Ardelia L. Allen(William) of Oxford, Ga. and Morean L. Dorsey (John) of Delaware; sisters-in-law, Nancy Lewis, Clarence Lewis, and Ellen P. Mosley of Lynchburg, Va.; brother-in-law, Michael Patterson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 12:00 until 1:00 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg. A Celebration of Oscar’s Life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, July 17, 2020 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg with the Rev. Don Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at the Lynchburg Baptist Cemetery. Military Honors to be performed by American Legion Post #16. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
