Lewis Charles Moorman, Jr.

Lewis Charles Moorman Jr., 95, of 3226 Downing Drive, Lynchburg, Va. died July 12, 2017 at Lynchburg General Hospital. Born March 30, 1922 in Lynchburg, Lewis was the son of the late Lewis Charles Moorman Sr. and Lillian Whitten Moorman. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Shirley Smith Moorman and daughter and son in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Anderson Mays, Jr. (Faye and Andy) of Amherst, Va. Lewis retired in 1987 as Plant Personnel Manager for Griffin Pipe Products Company with 33 years of service.  He was the first Personnel Manager in the Lynchburg area to achieve accreditation as a bona fide Personnel Manager. Prior to that, he was employed by the National Weather Service as a Meteorological Aide. Following his career as a Meteorologist he continued to keep abreast of the latest development in the field of weather forecasting. A decorated U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Lewis served on Admiral H.K. Hewitt’s staff and was assigned to an Amphibious Weather Forecasting Unit.  He earned four stars for enemy action participation in the invasions and occupations of North Africa, Sicily, Salerno (Italy), and Normandy on D-Day. During the Sicilian Campaign he was temporarily assigned to General George S. Patton Jr’s. 2nd Armored Division for special weather forecasting duty. Later he continues his military service as Captain in the Virginia State Guard. He wanted to be remembered as a true patriot and was proud of his divided military service, serving both in the U.S. Navy and temporary duty in the U.S. Army. A devotee of Sir Winston Churchill and George S. Patton, Jr. he had the honor of being in their presence on numerous occasions. During his civilian career Lewis was active in numerous industrial and civic organization, serving on boards and committees, and was a Mason, an Elk, and Kiwanian. He was a professional member of The American Meteorological Society, The American Society for Personal Administration, American Foundryman’s Association, The Leica Historical Society of America, The International Churchill Society, The Lynchburg Civil War Roundtable, a Life Member of American Legion Post-16, and a longtime member of Centenary United Methodist Church. He was featured in the 1980 edition of “Who’s Who in America’. Lewis was an avid reader, a student of the Civil War, World War II, and the contemporary history of the 1920’s decade. An automobile buff, he owned and drove several classic cars. To satisfy a sense of curiosity, he learned to play the organ and violin. A memorial service will be conducted at Centenary United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, July 17, 2017 with the Reverends C. Douglas Pillow and Douglas Gunsalus officiating. A reception in the fellowship hall will be held immediately following the service Interment will be privately at Spring Hill Cemetery. The family is most appreciative of and grateful for the many acts of kindness extended Lewis by the Staff and especially the West Wing nurses at The Carrington. Warren Monroe Foster

Warren Monroe Foster, 96, of Lynchburg, VA passed from this life Sunday, July 16, 2017 at the Carrington. The first child of the late Sydney M. and Myrtis Baker Foster, he was born March 17, 1921 in Campbell County, VA.  Warren graduated from Brookville High School in 1939 and was employed with Newport News Shipbuilding at the onset of World War II. Enlisting in the U. S. Army Air Corps, he became an aviation mechanic and served with distinction in the Pacific theater at one time as crew chief and flight engineer for Gen. James H. (Jimmy) Doolittle. Warren was employed with Piedmont Airlines from 1949 until his retirement in 1986. He couldn’t get away from airplanes. He is survived by his daughter Sherrilynn K. Foster of Lynchburg; his son Richard W. Foster, M.D. and wife K. Kambitsis Foster of Baton Rouge, LA; his grandchildren Nicholas Kambitsis Foster, Katherine Almond Foster Klein, and Stephanie Matiatos Foster Hanson, as well as great-grandchildren Tucker Alexander Foster, George Foster Klein, and Richard Nikolaus Foster. Warren was preceded in death just recently by his wife of 72 years Esther Mae Almond Foster and brothers Kenneth L. Foster, Jerald P. Foster, and Malcolm O. Foster. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Union Christian Church in Madison Heights. A Celebration of Warren’s Life will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, July 20, 2017 at Union Christian Church with Pastor Jim Freeman officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park with military honors performed by American Legion Post #16 Honor Guard.

View Tribute VideoMartha Anne McElhaney, aka Marty, aged 83, died Sunday July 16, 2017 in her Forest, VA home after a long struggle with cancer.  Marty was born January 29, 1934 in Greensburg, PA, a daughter of the late Sally and Matthew Hunter. She was a 1954 graduate of Kent University, where she met the love of her life and her husband of 62 years, Leonard Berton McElhaney.  Together they raised 2 children Kathryn Worley and David McElhaney. Marty was an active member of Timberlake United Methodist Church, enriching lives of others through numerous charity projects.  She was an avid sports fan, especially UVA basketball.  She loved to cross stitch and baked wonderful Christmas Cookies! She is survived by her sister Virginia Robertson and her husband Robbie of Las Vegas, Nevada; her brother William Hunter and his wife, Sally, of Brunswick, Ohio; her daughter Kathryn Worley and her husband, Michael, of Lynchburg, VA; her son David McElhaney and his wife, Robin, of Virginia Beach.  She is also survived by her three precious grandsons Lysle McElhaney and his wife, Charity, Stephen McElhaney and his wife, Debbie and Adam McElhaney and his wife, Kristen.   In 2012 Marty was blessed with the title Gigi (Great Grandma).  Two of her great grandchildren will greet her in heaven, Ainsley and Landon, twin daughters of Adam and Kristen.  Gigi will be watching over her other great grandchildren from heaven; Greyson, the son of Stephen and Debbie; Cami, daughter of Lysle and Charity and Sutton, son of Adam and Kristen.  She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families and a sister-in-law Martha McElhaney, of Tippecanoe, Ohio. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her brave battle these past eight months. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Timberlake Methodist Church Columbarium Fund. A celebration of Marty’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Timberlake United Methodist Church with a reception in the Family Life Center following the service. Walter A. (Sonny) Marshall, 81, of Lynchburg, went to be with the Lord on Monday, July 17, 2017.  He was a U. S. Navy veteran, a retired manager with Food Lion and a member of First Christian Church of Charlottesville. He is survived by his wife:  Evelyn Crain Marshall; children:  James H. (Candice) Marshall of Madison Heights, Debra M. (Melvin) Wright of Madison Heights, Susan L. Tyree of Amherst; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his beloved brother-in-law, Harry Smith, a sister-in-law, Nancy Marshall, his precious aunt, Virgie Blakely, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter L. & Dennett W. Marshall;  his first wife, Thelma Joyce Marshall; sons:  David W. Marshall and Michael L. Marshall;  brother:  Robert F. (Bob) Marshall; sister: Doris M. Smith. Dorothy Ann Taylor Obenchain, 90, of Bedford passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. She was born in Bradentown, FL on August 6, 1926. She is the daughter of the late Charles Walter Taylor and Pluma Ann Thomas Taylor. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Marshall Norvell Obenchain, Jr.; a great-granddaughter, Jaena Obenchain and two siblings McCoy Taylor and Thelma R. McDaniel. Dorothy retired after 20 years of service with the Department of Navy as a Consolidated Industrial Relations and Defense on the island of Guam. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Moneta. She enjoyed gardening, crossword puzzles, reading her Bible and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by two sons, John Marshall Obenchain, II and his wife, Patsy and James Michael Obenchain; four grandchildren, John Marshall Obenchain, III and his wife, Gaema, Jerhett Obenchain and his wife, Christy, Apryl Obenchain, Nicholas Obenchain; ten great-grandchildren, Janessa Obenchain, Justine Obenchain, John Marshall Obenchain IV, Jerhett J. “J.J.” Obenchain, Christian Obenchain, Keilani Obenchain, Jena Leiah Obenchain, Cerenna Obenchain, Coalbee Obenchain and Anthony Obenchain. Carrie Bass Booth, 93, of Concord, died Thursday, July 20, 2017. She was the loving wife of Thomas Addison Booth for 63 years. Born January 6, 1924, in Campbell County, Carrie was a daughter of the late William James Bass and the late Rosa Tuck Bass. In addition to her husband and parents, Carrie was preceded in death by five sisters, Edith Nash, Hattie Sowell, Evelyn Woodall, Ruby Carwile, and Grace Bass; three brothers, Ed Bass, Randolph Bass, and Alvin Bass; and two great-grandchildren, Hunter and Emma Lagos Carrie is survived by a son, Raymond “Ray” Booth and his wife, Dee, of Lynchburg; a daughter, Fran Cotner and her husband, Scott, of Danville; her grandchildren, Lisa Cotner of Wilmington, NC, Sherry Gray and her husband, Eric, of Forest, Vickie Lagos and her husband, Cris, of Altavista, and Kevin Booth and his wife, Katherine, of Lynchburg; and her great-grandchildren, Meagan and Matthew Gray, Sarah and Holly Lagos, and Kayla and Branden Ramirez. Carrie was a member of Early’s Chapel United Methodist Church for over 70 years. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Paul Roger “Capt. Seaweed” Berube, 83, of Moneta, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, July 19, 2017. He was born in South Swansea, MA on April 1, 1924. He was the son of the late Arthur Theodore Berube and Edna Frances Grenier Berube. In addition to his parents Capt. was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Hart Berube and a daughter, Diane Louise Hall. Capt. was a parishioner of Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta. He served his country in the United States Navy. Afterwards he received training to become an air traffic controller. He pursued that career until his retirement with Roanoke/ Blacksburg regional airport in Roanoke.  He loved spending time on Smith Mountain Lake. He was very well known in the community and will be missed by so many. He never met a stranger. Quite often he spent his time socializing and taking long strolls across the lake in his antique boat. He could often be found at social gathering, spending time with his family and friends and always offering a helping hand to a friend in need. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, sports cars, traveling and animals of all kinds. Capt. is survived by his two children, Danny Berube and his wife, Regine and Denise Berube; three grandchildren, Israel Berube, Abigail Easter and her husband, Jason and Katie Hall; two great-grandchildren, Sundari Berube and Robert Easter; one sister, Joy Bigos and her partner, Carl Ohlson also numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and so many friends. Paul was a member of American Legion Post 153 (Brookneal.) He is survived by his three children, Cynthia B. Mrs. Patricia Cline Keith, 82, of Roanoke, formerly of Covington, Virginia, died peacefully on July 19 with her daughters by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-six years, Richard Karl Keith; her parents Virginia Totten Cline and George Robert Cline; and brothers Robert Alvin Cline and Dennis Elwood Cline.  Patricia is survived by her daughters  Gayle Keith and special friend Gloria Dalton and Leigh Keith Broughman and husband Michael Broughman; brother Robert Arthur Cline; grandsons Adam Broughman and Holden Broughman; granddaughter Mahaley Reyns and great – grandson Cody Parks. Marietta Parker, 60, of Forest, died July 21, 2017 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the loving wife of Roy Welsh of 20 years. Born October 12, 1956 in Lynchburg, Va., Marietta was a daughter of Marietta Alma Proffitt Hartless, and the late Wilson J. Hartless. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her siblings, Barbara Arlene Harris, John M. Hartless and wife Dawn, Steve W. Austin and wife Ida, Tammy Crouch and husband Ernie. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Marietta was a member of Thomas Road Baptist Church for 27 years and a long time and faithful employee of Kentucky Fried Chicken for 20 years. She was highly recognized for her management achievements, and loved and adored by the young employees whom she mentored. Margaret P. Estes went to be with her Lord and Savior on July 21, 2017.  She was born in Gatesville, Texas on August 20, 1922 to parents Walter Parks and Earline Pennington.  She married John H. Estes III in 1946.  Margaret lived with her husband in El Paso, TX before moving to San Antonio, TX and then Moneta, VA. She volunteered for many years at a Hospital in El Paso.  She provided comfort to many patients.  She also worked with the local churches, and enjoyed traveling around the USA with her husband.  She was loved by many. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, John H. Estes III and a sister Etta Blanchard.  She is survived by her son, John H. Estes IV, her daughter, Margaret J. Davis, 6 Grandchildren, 14 Great-grandchildren, and 4 Great-great grandchildren. Glovinia D. Bratzel, 96, of Lynchburg, Va., went to be with the Lord Sunday, July 23, 2017. She was the wife of the late Donald Everett Bratzel. Glovinia was born Monday, January 24, 1921 in Keyser, WVa., a daughter of the late Daniel and Martha Rumer. She was retired from Mademoiselle Fashions where she was the store manager. She was a member of Keyser Presbyterian Church and later attended Heritage Baptist Church after she relocated to Lynchburg. She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Bellows (Dave), Lynchburg, Va.; son, William Craig Bratzel, Whitney, Texas; eight grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her siblings and her daughter-in-law, Sherry Bratzel. A graveside service will take place on Thursday, July 27, 2017 at 1 p.m. in Potomac Memorial Gardens, 597 Cemetery Road, Keyser WVa., 26726. Kenneth B. Sauer, Sr. 68, of Wirtz, VA passed away on Tuesday, July 25, 2017.                        .  He was preceded in death by his parents Jean M. Grant and Ernest A. Sauer, Sr. and his stepfather Edwin L. Grant.  He was also preceded by his brother Ernest A. Sauer Jr. Ken was born in Grandview Hospital in Sellersville, PA on January 3, 1949.  He graduated from Hatboro Horsham High School and Delaware Valley College.  He was in the Naval Air Reserve for 6 years.  During his working years, he enjoyed various management positions in the heavy equipment industry.  However, his greatest joy and love was his family. He was an exceptional husband, father, and friend.  He was married to Marie C. Sauer for 48 wonderful years.  He is survived by his daughter Colleen M. Sauer, Hillsborough, NC and son Kenneth B. Sauer Jr. and wife Monica, Breinigsville, PA.  He adored his seven grandchildren, Avery Sauer, Grace Sauer, Nina Sauer, Owen Sauer, Kenny O’Melia, Joey O’Melia and Mikey O”Melia.  Their love and support were an inspiration to him during his illness. After moving from Pennsylvania in 2009 and retiring, Ken not only enjoyed his time on Smith Mountain Lake but also enjoyed volunteering at various organizations and was drawn to helping those in need. His faith was extremely important to him.  He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and a Stephen Minister. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 13586 Old Moneta Rd., Moneta, VA 24121 on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 11:00 am with David Lord officiating.  A reception will take place immediately following the service. Marvin Franklin Jeffries, 84, of Huddleston, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at his residence.  He was the loving husband of Gloria Elizabeth Whitmer Jeffries. Born in Craig County on March 15, 1933 he was a son of the late Julian Forest and Ida Mae Starling Jeffries. He retired in 1999 from ITSI.
