B. Leigh Drewry, Jr., peacefully died on Friday, December 1, 2017, with his family and friends by his side. Born in Richmond, Virginia he was the son of the late Burton Drewry, Sr., and Nancy Drewry. After spending his early years in Drewryville, Va., his family moved to South Hill, Va. where he graduated from Kenston Forest School. Leigh was a 1979 graduate of the University of Virginia where he served as a manager for the football team for two years and as head manager also for two years. He also served as manager of the women’s basketball team under the leadership of Debbie Ryan. After graduation he took a job as a reporter for a bi-weekly newspaper in Franklin, Va. He entered T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond in 1980, completing his degree requirements in December 1982. Leigh moved from Richmond to Culpeper to take a job as a legal aid attorney. In 1984, he moved to Lynchburg to work as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney. He served as a prosecutor in Campbell County for two years and in Lynchburg for eight. In 1994, Leigh opened his own practice and later combined his solo practice to join forces and form Cunningham & Drewry. Leigh served on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and as its president. He has also served as President of the Lynchburg Bar Association. He was a past member of Board of Directors of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Virginia, Inc. and a past president. He served in various positions in his local church (Heritage United Methodist Church) and was currently serving as a Trustee of the Virginia United Methodist Foundation. In addition to his mother, Leigh is survived by his wife of thirty years, Anne; his two children, Robert Drewry of Richmond, Va., and Rebecca Drewry of Charleston, S.C.; his brother, George Drewry; his sister, Sarah Abernathy (Francis), as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and a very special thank you to his friend and longtime assistant Amber Mayhew. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Drewryville Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 125, Drewryville, VA 23844 or the Virginia Legal Aid Society, 513 Church Street, Lynchburg, VA 24504. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at Heritage United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Paul Baker officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior. A luncheon will be held at the church immediately following the service. The family invites you to fellowship with them at the home of Leigh and Anne’s, 72 Catalpa Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502, this evening, Sunday, December 3, 2017, between the hours of 2 to 5 p.m.  A special thank you to Dr. John MacNeill and the nursing staff of the Alan B. Chester Sturgill

Chester Sturgill, 88, of Roanoke, VA, formally of Livingston, KY, completed his journey on earth Saturday, December 2, 2017, after a long, hard fought battle to live.

He was preceded in death by his parents John Sturgill and Emma Thomas Sturgill. Chester also had brothers and sisters precede him in death.

Chester is survived by the love of his life, his adoring wife of 63 years, Cora, formally of Millboro, VA; a brother, J.T. Sturgill; a sister, Gladys Baker; a daughter, Dee McCafferty; a son, Gary Sturgill; a granddaughter, Shawna; and three great grandchildren.

Chester proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during the nineteen fifties. After his service, he worked as a master diesel mechanic and was instrumental in the construction of Interstate 64 and other major construction projects.

Chester’s last years were spent enjoying the peace of his backyard and inspiring others by his example of living with peaceful determination through illness. Chester is sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and at the Salem Veteran’s Administration Medical Center for the wonderful care and attention Chester received while at both facilities.

 A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Family and friends are invited to visit the family home.

Joseph Dean "Boe" Johnson

Joseph Dean “Boe” Johnson, 39, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, December 02, 2017. He was the husband of Holly Johnson for two years. Born Sunday, June 25, 1978 in Charlottesville, VA, Boe was a son of the late Elmer Kenneth “Buster” Staton and Carol and Tommy Wood. In addition to his wife and parents, Boe is survived by his son, Dylan and his stepdaughter, Jaycee; siblings; Melisha Layne and husband, Chad, Homer Johnson and wife, Erin, Brandy Clark and husband, Robbie Dee Koelsch and husband Richard, Brandy Robertson, Frances Floyd, Willie Darbro, Bronson Wood, and a host of nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. In addition to his father, Boe was preceded in death by two sisters, Leslie Darlene Staton and Kristy Staton Goodman; a brother Elmer Kenneth “Shorty” Wright; a nephew Christian Blake Clark; and his grandparents. Boe was a fun, loving guy who loved working on cars, welding, riding motorcycles, and fishing. He enjoyed making people laugh and spending time with his family. A celebration of Boe’s life will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at New Beginnings Pentecostal Holiness Church 737 Blue Ridge Ave. Bedford, with Adam Staton officiating. Luther Danny "Dan" Fry

Luther Danny “Dan” Fry, of Lynchburg, went into the arms of the Lord peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on December 3, 2017 at the age of 87. Born April 7, 1930, in Lynchburg, Va., he was the son of Helen Coleman Fry and Cannor Stuart Fry. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jean Fry, and their children Daneen Garcia (Chip) of Lynchburg, and Gregory (Brigitta) of Valencia, Calif. He is also survived by two cherished grandchildren, Savannah and Christopher Fry of Valencia, Calif., and a brother, Lowell Fry (Mary) of Bladensburg, Md. He was preceded in death by his brothers and their wives, John Coleman Fry (Lennie), Charles Fry (Kitty), along with two step-brothers, Milton Fry (Edna) and Ashley Fry (Mildred). Dan was of the Baptist faith and lived his entire life firmly believing that honesty and integrity defined you as a person in every walk of life. He graduated from E.C. Glass High School in the class of 1947 and immediately went to work at Mead Board Sales as a shipping clerk. He worked his way up through the company and in 1959 was given the opportunity to join the Sales Group as a salesman. His first sales position was in Detroit, Mich. where he met his future wife, Betty Jean Gardner. They married in 1960 and started a family in Detroit. He quickly gained a reputation as an extremely valuable salesman and was transferred to Dallas, Texas in 1961 to open a new sales office. In 1964 he was transferred to Memphis, Tenn. to again open a new sales office. In 1965 he was transferred to Atlanta, Ga. to an established sales office. In 1967 the opportunity was offered to return to Lynchburg as the Sales Manager of the Lynchburg Plant. He and his family moved to Lynchburg and he continued as a salesman with Mead Board Sales until they were acquired by Rock Tenn Company in 1988. He retired from the Mead Corporation and was hired by Rock Tenn to continue his sales career. He retired from Rock Tenn in 1995 after 48 years of continued dedicated service. Honesty and integrity made him one of the Mead Corporation/Rock Tenn Company’s most valued employees. He always considered Denny Fringer to be one of his most valued friends and co-workers. We would like to thank Centra Hospice for their compassionate, kind, and loving care through these last six months. Laverne, his CAN who showered him twice a week, became a favorite of his and he looked forward to her visits. Chrys Blue, his nurse, has become a family friend over and above being a nurse. Every person we encountered was like an angel carrying a blanket of comfort for the entire family. The family extends to Dr. Michael Will their thanks for his professional care through the years. A graveside service will be held at Fort Hill Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2017 with the Rev. Monty Fox officiating. Stuart H. Knight, 73, of Big Island, passed away Monday, December 4, 2017. Stuart was a graduate of Big Island High School and attended Bluefield College.  He retired from Georgia Pacific and was a Lifetime Member of the Big Island Volunteer Fire Department where he served as chief for many years.  Stuart was a member of Big Island Baptist Church where he served as church treasurer. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Rayetta Ross Knight and daughters, Rakia Jones and her fiancé Kenneth Herron of Lynchburg and  Regina Fitzgerald and her husband Jeff of Big Island; two grandchildren, Todd  Fitzgerald and Dianne Fitzgerald. A memorial service will be held at Big Island Baptist Church at 11 am Saturday, December 9, 2017.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service and lunch will follow in the Fellowship Hall. Susan Housel Dillon, 77, of Roanoke passed away on Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Lewis Gale Medical Center. She was born in New Jersey on November 8, 1940. A daughter of the late John Housel and Mary King Housel.   Susan is survived by two children, Mitzi Marcinak and her husband, Larry and Frank Terry, Jr. and his wife, Angela; four grandchildren, Nichole Pettrey, Daniel Marcinak, Hallie Terry and Alec Terry; one great-grandchild, Athena Marcinak; two brothers, John Housel and Charles “Chuck” Housel and his wife, Mary Jane; also three nephews, one niece and many friends. Eileen Lyle Hildenberger, 100, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, December 4, 2017. She was born on July 31, 1917 in Bridgeport, Connecticut to the late Sarah McNiff Lyle and Henry Francis Lyle. She was the widow of Martin Joseph Hildenberger, Jr. Mrs. Hildenberger is survived by five daughters, Sr. Mary Frances Hildenberger, DC, Kelsey “Ruth” Zimmerman (Fred), Martha Hubbard (Steve), Claire Ott (Warren), and Eileen “Lee” Lass (Paul); four sons, John (Denise), Mark (Brenda), Bruce (Kirby Purcell), and Kevin (Susan); one sister, Sr. Frances Lyle, OSU; 25 grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. She will also be greatly missed by her devoted caregivers Nancy Williams and Trina Calloway. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Robert Lyle and William Lyle (for both of whom Eileen served as caregiver in their final years); one sister, Rita Siering; one son, Martin Hildenberger; and two grandchildren (Paul Lass III and Mary Frances Ott). Since her family moved to Lynchburg in 1959, Eileen has been a devoted member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, active in the Ladies of Charity, the choir, the Bereavement Committee, and as a representative of her parish with Church Women United. Eileen’s commitment to life led to faithful service in the Virginia Society for Human Life. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Clay Street, Lynchburg, on Saturday, December 9, 2017, at noon. Dorothy Mae Coleman, 84, of Lynchburg, died Monday, December 04, 2017.  She was the wife of Harold Lloyd Coleman, Sr. for 54 years Born Wednesday, July 19, 1933 in Raleigh, NC, Dot was a daughter of the late James Ray and the late Maggie Gooch Ray. Donald “Ricky” Richard Lowe, 71, of Lynchburg died Saturday, December 2, 2017. Ricky was born on December 30, 1945 in Lynchburg, a son of the late J. Lewis Lowe and Lena Gibson Lowe. Richard was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was recently working as a medical transporter. He is survived by his son Michael Lowe of Lynchburg, a sister Gloria Jennings of Concord, his close friend Eunice L. Jackson of Lynchburg, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Cynthia Ann Mays. In keeping with Richard’s wishes, a memorial service will be held privately at a later date. Phillip “Danny” Clark, 62, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Victoria Vaden Clark, his mother and father-in-law, Pauline and Junior Conner, a sister, Brenda Francisco, two brothers, Barry Huffman and Steve Clark. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Donna Conner Clark, two brothers, Donnie Huffman and wife Lori, and Tommy Clark and wife Teresa, two sisters, Joyce Blankenship and Vicki, two brothers-in-law, Wayne Conner and Butch Conner and wife Barbara, a sister-in-law, Shirley Trout and husband Ken, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 12:00 pm, Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017 at House of Prayer, 2521 Portland Ave., Roanoke, VA 24017 by Pastors Gary and Scott Butcher. Gary Thomas Booth, 64, of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Carillon Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lynchburg, VA on April 22, 1953. A son of the late Nathan Thomas Booth and Ruby Viola Floyd Branch. Gary was a crane operator for Wheelabrator Abrasives. He loved collecting antique cars especially old Ford’s. He enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and doing yard work. He will be missed by all that knew him. Gary is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Dianne St. Clair Booth, three children, Eric Thomas Booth, Samantha Jo Booth and fiancée, Matthew Drumheller and Tyler Lee Booth; one special granddaughter, Lucille “Lucy” Drumheller; two siblings, Ronald “Ronnie” Booth and Rhonda Mitchell and her husband, John; also numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Eloise Conley, 90, of Forest, died Sunday, December 10, 2017. She was born on September 28, 1927, in Huntington, WV, a daughter of the late Otis McIntyre and Virgie Cremeans McIntyre.  Eloise came to know the Lord in 1948 and was a member of Heritage Baptist Church.  She was the widow of Robert Daniel Conley. Eloise is survived by a daughter, Pamela Schmidt and her husband, Robert; a son, Brent Conley and his wife, Rosemary; four grandchildren: Tracy Heppell and her husband, Randy, Ty Schmidt, and Nate and Ian Conley; a sister, Ann Sowards and a brother, Jerry McIntyre. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert D. Conley, Jr. A Celebration of Eloise’s Life will take place at 4:00PM on Thursday, December 14th, 2017, in the Chapel of Heritage Baptist Church with Pastor Allen officiating.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 3:00 to 4:00 at the church. Lawrence “Larry” David Pierceall, Sr. 72, of Bedford passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017.  He was the husband of Judith Ann Flowers Elston Pierceall.   Born September 13, 1945 in Athens, Illinois, he was the son of the late James Frederick Pierceall and Bertha Mae Hamilton.  Larry served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War; he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Army Achievement medal and the Good Conduct medal. He retired as Maintenance Supervisor with the National Park Service on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Larry was a lifetime member of the VFW in Bedford and a member of the Masons. He was a member of the Cornerstone Church of Christ.   In addition to his wife, Judith he is survived by his two sons: Thomas David Pierceall of Montvale, Lawrence David Pierceall, Jr. and wife, Vicki of California; seven grandchildren: Kaitlynn, Kevin, Julianna, Michael, Bryant, Breanna, and Taylor; two great-grandchildren: Aiden and Violet; and several nieces and nephews.   A celebration of Life service will be held Friday, December 15, 2017 at the home of Judith Pierceall from 1:00-6:00 p.m. Final inurnment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.   The family request memorial contributions be made in Larry’s honor to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O.Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.   To send condolences online please visit www.tharpfuneralhome.com.
