Carolyn Dunn Smith, 80, of Lynchburg, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 22, 2016. She died peacefully in Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was the devoted wife of Owen "Wimp" Winfrey Smith for 59 years. Born in Lynchburg, Virginia, on October 12, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Charlotte Virginia Dunn and Eldridge Fountaine Dunn. She is survived by her husband, three sons: Mark and his wife Robin, David and his wife Jeri, and Paul and his wife Linda. Grandchildren include Dana, Matthew, Zachary, Rachael and Katie all of whom affectionately call her, “Gran.” She is also survived by her brother, Eldridge Dunn, Jr. Her family and love for God were the most important things to Carolyn. She attended Lynchburg College and worked for 20 years with Lynchburg City Schools at Sandusky Middle School. She was an active member and served in the library at West Lynchburg Baptist Church where she was a member for her entire life. She also enjoyed volunteering at Virginia Baptist Hospital, and most especially (in years past) helping her grandchildren in their elementary school libraries—where she was a dedicated grandmother volunteer! Additionally, Carolyn was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Carolyn enjoyed reading, sewing, quilting, traveling, cooking--she is famous for her pound cake and blackberry cobbler--and most importantly, spending time with family, whom she always put first before herself. A few weeks before her passing, when asked if there was anything else she wanted to do with her life and what would make her happy, she responded simply "I just want everyone to be happy. As long as they're happy, I'm happy." Carolyn spread the word of God's everlasting and perfect love to everyone in her life. She was an example of Christ every single day and she is now experiencing Him in a way we can only dream of. The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, today, Tuesday, May 24, from 6 to 8 PM. A Celebration of Carolyn’s Life will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg with Rev. Dr. Robert Putt officiating.
