Doris Elaine Witt Holdren, age 91, of Myrtle Beach, SC passed away on Wednesday, December 19, 2018. Born in Roanoke, VA on August 28, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Essie Agee Witt. She was the loving wife of the late Roy David Holdren. In addition to her husband and parents she was preceded in death by her son, James Lynn Holdren. Doris established her career with Rubatex as a purchasing agent. In her spare time, she enjoyed walking especially on the beach and spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Lynette Cheek; grandsons, Joshua Cheek (Allison) and Trevor Cheek (Jenna); great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Austin, Jacobie, Jaxon, Joshua David; sister, Betty Chiappa; and her favorite companion, Hero. Jimmy Lee Wood, 53, of Lynchburg, died on Wednesday, December 19, 2018. Jimmy was born in Lynchburg, Va. on June 22, 1965. He was a son of the late Jerry Wood and Belle Nulter. Jimmy was a talented Body and Fender technician. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, racing, and spending time with family and friends. His heart belonged to his wife, Mary, his children, and his grandchildren. A special thanks to Centra Hospice and Bernadette Platt for the care given to Jimmy during his illness. A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights. William Miles Browning, Sr., 84, of Madison Heights, Va. died on Saturday, December 22, 2018, in Lynchburg, Va. He was the husband of Grace Browning for 44 years. Born Thursday, September 27, 1934 in Nelson County, Va., he was the son of the late William Browning and the late Jessee Purvis Browning. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin Browning and Tray Browning; and two sisters, Edie Stevens and Doris Johnson. William served his country during the Korean Conflict in the U.S. Air Force. He attended Union Christian Church and retired from Brockman Chevrolet In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, William M. Browning, Jr., (Charlotte), Randall Browning, Debbie Campbell Ware (Mike), and A. Wayne Campbell (Pam); brother, Waller Browning; sisters, Penny Umbarger (Charles) and Gayle Graybill (Mason); eight grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of William’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Union Christian Church with the Reverend Jim Freeman officiating. Joseph “Joe” Beverly, of Amherst, passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018. He was the husband of 42 years to Mary Franklin Beverly. He was born July26, 1946 to Henry Beverly and Mamie Banks Beverly.   In addition to his parents Joe was preceded in death by his son, Tony Jones; brothers Henry Beverly, Thomas Banks; and sisters, Lucille Beverly, Mamie Beverly and Betty Carter.  Besides his wife Joe leaves to mourn his death his devoted children,  Neisy Jones of Lynchburg, Va., Rudy Jones (Elayne) of Roanoke, Va., Paddy Jones (Gloria) of Washington, D.C.,; six grandchildren, Diondra Jones, Jarriett ”Jay” Kiser, James “Jay” Jones, Jonathan Jones, Jade Lane, and Elyse McFalls;  two great-grandchildren, Noah Jones and Ja’onna Jones; one brother, David Beverly of Amherst;  three sisters, Margeret Beverly of Massachusetts, Maxine Harris of Ohio, and Hattie Crews of Lynchburg; two devoted brothers-in-law, Gorden Franklin and Price Franklin;  sisters-in-law, Fannie Groom and Diane Beverly; a very devoted former daughter-in-law, Dionne Warrick Jones; nieces, Kathy Henderson and her son Ron, Jr., also Alanea Beverly and a host of other nephews, nieces, cousins and other family and friends.  Joe was a very hard working man who spent some time being self-employed and 26 years with VDOT. He was known in the community as one that loved gardening and raising farm animals over the years he has had rabbits, goats and cows. He enjoyed having his grandchildren and other children to come visit and showing them his animals and taking them for rides through his fields. Joe was also known for helping those in his neighborhood who were in need, just recently he helped several of his neighbors push their driveways after a recent snow storm. Everyone in the community knew Joe as a caring and dependable person he will be truly missed by all.  Joe was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on February 6, 1977, and remained a faithful servant for many years. Just like in his neighborhood, Joe was known in the congregation as one who did whatever he could to help anyone in need. He also had a willing spirit and would help out wherever he was needed in the congregation, even when he was not asked he would do what needed to be done. Even the young children in the congregation would look for Joe after the meeting for candy he would share with them. Joe also enjoyed spending time in his door to door ministry work. He knew many of the people he talked to and love telling them about God’s kingdom.  Joe knew no stranger he talked to everyone he met and even strangers quickly realized he was a caring, gentle kind man. All in the community and the congregation truly loved Joe and will miss his kind and caring spirit.  A funeral service will be conducted on Saturday December 29, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2 p.m. Interment will follow the service in the Franklin Family Cemetery, 1348 Buffalo Springs Turnpike, Amherst, VA 24521. Joshua Steven Martin, 30, of Lynchburg passed away unexpectedly at his home on December 23 2018.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Louis and Carolynn Witt, Jerry Rosenberger, and James Johnson. He was a graduate of Brookville High School. At an early age, he professed his faith in Jesus Christ. He had a passion for history, cooking, hard work, and most of all his family. He adored his two nephews. His compassionate life will forever be cherished in the lives of his family: parents Steve and Alisa Martin of Lynchburg; brother and sister-in-law Jacob and Cianne Martin of Bozeman, MT; sister and brother-in-law Joy and Sam Landa, and nephews Bowman and Beckham Landa of Lynchburg; grandparents Connie and Lauralyn Martin; grandparents Faye and Jim Huff; aunt and uncle Roxanne and Mike Frey; aunt and uncle Debra and Kyle Dooley; uncle Jeff Johnson; uncle and aunt Peter and Julie Martin; uncle and aunt Lantz and Kristi Martin; a host of devoted cousins, great aunts and uncles, and friends. David Eugene Windsor

David Eugene Windsor, 65, of Concord, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 23, 2018. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ernest N. Windsor, Jr. and Mark Windsor, and sister, Jeanne Windsor. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran during the Vietnam era, and later worked and retired from the Coca Cola Company as a refrigeration mechanic. In addition to his wife, Teresa Windsor, David is survived by his sons: David L. Windsor and wife Audrianna, Neil Windsor and wife, Vanessa; three grandchildren, Adelina Grace Windsor, Logan Joseph Windsor and Selena Hope Windsor; sisters, Ellen Ann Moore, Christine Tippett, Beverly Collins, Janice Pollak; brothers-in-law, Michael Lopez and Ricky Lopez; sister-in-law, Andrea Siemienski; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marian Yvonne Nowlin

Marian Yvonne Nowlin was born on March 27, 1936 to the late Theresa N. Nowlin and Hurley Nowlin, Sr. She graduated from Campbell County High School in Rustburg, Virginia and was a life subscribing adult member of the NAACP. With strong family roots, she established her home not far from where it all began in the Fairview Heights community of Lynchburg, Virginia. As a loyal employee of General Electric (G.E.), later Ericsson, she made many acquaintances and several faithful friends before her retirement. One in particular, Mr. Tom Butterfield, encouraged Marian’s love and appreciation for God, family and quality time. She enjoyed seeing the beauty in nature and her community- walks along the James River, attending plays and musical performances, taking trips and sightseeing as the Lynchburg of her youth evolved to new homes, roads, and businesses. Her church home, The Greater Brookville Baptist Church, was a place of joy and service. Until the onset of her illness, she enjoyed attending Bible Studies, Vacation Bible School, taking computer classes and serving alongside the other members of the Clothing Ministry and the Lovely Zion Missionary Circle. Marian is survived by her three siblings James Nowlin, Sr. (Carentha), Ruby Carr (Joseph), and Hurley Nowlin, Jr.; her two children, Osby Nowlin, Sr. (Gale) and Bonita Nowlin; grandchildren, Osby Nowlin II (Trena), Tawana Mason (Matthew), Jolito Rivera, and Tamia James; great-grandchildren, Hannah Mason, Taylor Mason, and Amira Rivera, as well as a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members. She departed this life on December 24, 2018 in the peace and comfort of her home with loved ones. To each of us who knew this sweet spirit - whether as Marian or Mom, Sister, Grandma or G.G. - one fact remains, she knew Jesus was the way. A funeral service will be held 12 noon on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, with Rev. Waddell Jones, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior. Larry Allen Mason, 80, of Huddleston passed away on Monday, December 24, 2018 at his residence. For 58 years he was the loving husband of Peggy Jean Parris Mason. Born May 13, 1938 in Bluefield West Virginia, he was the son of the late Howard Bryant Mason and Molly Evelyn Mills Mason. He is also preceded in death by brothers: Garland and Donald Mason. Larry proudly served his country in the U.S. Army 101st airborne division. He was an active member of Moneta Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons: Barry Allen Mason and wife, Kimberly, Brian Clay Mason and wife, Tammy; grandchildren: Bayard, Anne Hayes, Parker and Peyton Mason; and brother: Robert Mason. Funeral service will be held Saturday, December 29, 2018 at Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield, Virginia at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Dr. David Sexton. She was born on July 5, 1952 to the late Harrington Carter and the late Virginia Mosby Carter. She always had a sense to help those in need. She had a wonderful outgoing personality and was loved by many. She was always searching for an opportunity to serve her fellow man. She will be dearly missed. She is survived by her sister, Virgie Carter of Arrington; and many cousins, other relatives, and friends.   Edith Lila Goff Padgett, 87, of Forest passed away on Thursday, December 27, 2018 in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late Floyd Reid Padgett, Sr. Born July 31, 1931 in Bedford County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Annie Goff. She is also preceded in death by a son: Kenneth L. Padgett. Edith is survived by her son: Floyd Padgett, Jr. and wife, Wanda; two daughters: Teresa and Wanda Padgett; grandchildren: Joseph Eric Padgett, Whitney McDill and husband, Chris, Tara Lynchard and husband, Nick, Maddie Wodjyla, Rhiannon Wodjyla; and her special friend: Evelyn Strange. Edith was a loving mother and grandmother, she loved her church and her church family. She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church and also Central Baptist Church. Sandra Chewning Harris went home to be with her Lord December 28, 2018.  Sandra was 75, and lived at 643 Allen Creek Rd. Gladstone before moving to Fairmont Crossing Rehabilitation Center in Amherst in 2010 due to declining health. She graduated from Amherst High in 1961.  She then went to Phillips Business School and spent most of her adult life working at Lynchburg Training Schools and Hospital in the office for 33 years before retiring. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Mike and Patty Chewning in Greenville, SC.  She is the daughter of the late Warner and Lorraine Chewning in Lynchburg. Her memorial service will be held Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. at Runk and Pratt Senior Living facility, Liberty Ridge, 30 Monica Blvd.  Lynchburg. Hattie Louise Bradshaw, 80, of Lynchburg, died December 25, 2018 at home surrounded by her family.  Hattie was born February 10, 1938 in Emporia, VA.  She was the oldest daughter of the late Joseph Benjamin Bradley and the late Elizabeth Rebecca Pollard.  She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Benjamin Brooks Bradley. Hattie is survived by her sons: Benjamin Bradley Ferguson and wife Pamela of Charleston, SC, Tony Ferguson of New Bern, NC, and Jason Joseph Ferguson and wife Suzanne of Lynchburg, VA; sister and brother-in-law Judy and Fred Woodall of Virginia Beach, VA; eight grandchildren, Kylie Solis and husband Ron of Kiel, Germany, Grace Ferguson, Charlotte Ferguson, Talon Ferguson, Thorin Ferguson, Gabriel Ferguson, Gunar Ferguson and Lena Ferguson of Lynchburg, VA; nephews Brian Woodall and wife Kelli of Mt. Juliet, TN and Kevin Woodall and wife Jennifer of Stafford, VA; niece Bethany Woodall of Virginia Beach, VA; and dear friends Terry and Diane Wilson and Rosemary Sulc. Hattie was a devoted mother and grandmother and a wonderful friend to many.  She will be missed by all.  She was a member of Peakland Baptist Church and the Inglewood Garden Club. Carl David Woodie December 14th, 1954 - December 27th, 2018 Age 64 Our beloved husband, father, poppy, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend, peacefully entered into the House of the Lord on December 27th, 2018; preceded in death by his loving mother, Magaline May Roten Woodie "Peggy"; his parents-in-love Ren and Willis Bare; brother-in-love Dwight Bare; his maternal grandparents Bunk and Johnsie Roten; and his paternal grandparents Oscar and Minnie Woodie. Left to mourn his passing are Terressa Bare Woodie, his beloved wife of 43 years; his devoted son, Jeremy Dwight Woodie and his wife Sheena; his special niece who he loved like a daughter, Anna Marie White and her son, Colton Marshall White who adored his "Poppy"; his brothers and sisters Rocky Bare (Doris), Mona Lisa Bare (Joyce Patterson), Ray Bare (Tonja), Shannon Bare, Angela Blankenship (Michael), Garren Bare, Sabrina Bondurant (Scott), and Allen Woodie (Sheryl); father Carl Woodie; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends, including some very dear "old" friends. Born and raised in Vinton, David and Terressa's love story began as youth in church. After graduating William Byrd High School and proudly serving in the United States Army, their love story culminated in their marriage in 1975. In the following years, he served faithfully as bus driver and maintenance at Vinton Day Nursery and Kindergarten while managing and building properties in Vinton, Roanoke County and City. He was a Charter member of Vinton Breakfast Lion's Club; on the board of Arnold R. Burton; dedicated and faithful to his church family at First Church of God, Vinton. Always an avid music lover, David played in two semi-professional bands: The Equalizers (swing and oldies) and Hired Guns (southern rock). His appreciation of music carried over to his more recent years and attendance at Parkway Wesleyan Church on the Mountain, where he especially enjoyed the Praise and Worship Team. David lent his ladders and electrical expertise at Christmastime when his health and energy permitted him to do so. Although health issues denied him consistent attendance, he loved the Lord and never missed an opportunity to share with others his gentle and loving testimony. Throughout his health journey with heart and lung disease and eventually cancer, he never missed a sunrise, proclaiming God's mercy in giving him another day. The family wishes to thank: Physicians to Children for their gift of time; Salem VA Medical Center (especially David Cuff and Lawson Koeppel); Good Samaritan Hospice (Jean, Lorri, Lynnette, Tracy, Cindy, and Cathy); and Cundiff's Drugstore. A memorial celebration of David's life will be held Saturday, January 5th, 2019 at 11am at Parkway Wesleyan Church on the Mountain (460) in Roanoke, VA. The family is being assisted by Tharp Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., with the service conducted by Pastor Mike Lauridsen. Dorothy Mawyer “Dot” Giles, age 70, of 78 Acorn Drive, Rustburg, died Friday, December 28, 2018 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the loving wife of Wayne Giles for 30 years. Dot was born January 15, 1948 in Charlottesville, VA, the daughter of the late Herman and Nellie Mawyer. She is also survived by a son Dean Callahan; two stepdaughters Cheryl Mann (Ricky) and Debbie Wooldridge; two sisters Nancy Ogden (Sonny) and Joyce Purvis; one granddaughter Alexson Williams; two step-grandchildren, three step-great grandchildren, one step-great-great grandson, and five special nieces. Dot was co-owner of Foxbriar gift shop in Altavista, VA until her retirement. Her greatest love after retirement was to travel the US and that she did. But her special love was TEXAS Respecting Dot’s wishes, there will be no funeral service or visitation. The family respectfully requests privacy at this time.
