Nell Glenn Holt, 96, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 22, 2019 at Westminster Canterbury.
Nell was born in Hopkinsville, Kentucky to the late Wade and Anne Glenn. She is proceeded in death by her brothers, Paul Glenn and Charles Glenn, as well as her niece Jane Glenn. Nell was fortunate to have loved three amazing men who also precede her in death; Lee Johnson, Cassel Duval Holt, and Max Eckert. Additionally, three step sons, Duval, Robert, and Tad Holt have gone on before her. Nell is survived by her sisters in law, Sabine Glenn, and Sharon Glenn, her step daughter, Nancy McWane and her step daughters in law, Peggy, Lou, and Anne Holt, her nephews, Paul and Todd Glenn, Wade, Steve, and Mark Glenn and their families. Nell is also survived by 6 great nieces and nephews, 14 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 18 great great grandchildren and her longtime companion, Peggy Anderson.
Nell spent much time with her Grandparents in “Hoptown”, Kentucky. She married her first husband, Lee Johnson, who was killed in WW2. She became a designer at the Rutherford Garment Company, where she met her second husband, Jack Holt. She gained four step children, and would go on to enjoy a very large and loving step family. After Jack’s passing, Nell became a writer for Veranda magazine, where she would meet and fell in love with photographer Max Eckert. Max and Nell traveled the world, and split their time between Palm Desert, CA and Lynchburg, VA, before finally settling at Nell’s long time home in Lynchburg. Nell was an honorary member of the Hillside Garden Club where she was involved in many projects.
Nell will be remembered for the amazing stories she told of her adventurous life, taking her great grandchildren on tractor rides around her home, and never knowing a stranger. Nell loved a good meal and a good wine. She was a kind and generous person, and full of life until the end.
Her family would like to thank all of the caregivers at Westminster Canterbury for their care of Nell, and her family, over the last several years.

Phillip Henry Dugger
Phillip Henry Dugger, 73, of Roanoke passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2019 at Friendship Health & Rehab in Roanoke. He was born on May 17, 1945 in Lynchburg. A son of the late Phillip Henry Blackwell Dugger and Dorothy Godsey Torres. Henry was on the unload team at Kroger he was also a great handyman. He was a kind, happy go lucky gentleman who never met a stranger. He also loved the outdoors, going fishing and spending time with his family.
Henry is survived by his wife, Alma Dugger, sister, Barbara Jean Dugger; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many friends.

Kenneth Rudolph Zechini
Kenneth Rudolph Zechini “Zeke” passed away on Sunday, March 24, 2019. He was born on April 17, 1924 in Harrison County, Ohio to Lorenzo Leo Zechini, Sr. and Geneva Barbieri Zechini. He attended both Holy Cross and Brookville schools. In 1948 he joined the Army and ultimately was stationed in Tokyo, Japan, where he served as a medic. After his service in the Army he returned to Lynchburg and was employed at Mead Corporation. He retired from Mead after 35 years.
He was the last surviving of his seven siblings. He is predeceased by Lorenzo, Jr., Baby Arthur, Mary, Sarah, Arturo, Carlton, and Esther.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Annie P. Zechini; and his four children, Vicki Z. Barrett (Tim), Marcus Zechini, Christopher Zechini, and Elizabeth Z. Smith (Earl); along with his beloved grandchildren, Allen (Christie), Zeta, Joe (Amber), Izzy, Mariana, Mayzie, Hannah, Liza, and Mason.
Zeke loved raising tomatoes, playing Tunk, dancing the Jitterbug (“one for the boys in the balcony!”), cheering for the Irish of Notre Dame, spaghetti on Sundays, belting out a verse from each of his favorite songs, and visits from his children and grandchildren.
Our family would like to thank Centra Hospice for their compassion for our dad and Heritage Green for the kindness shown to “Mr. Zeke.” Finally, we want to thank our mother, Anne, for the way she selflessly cared for Dad, especially during his last and most challenging years.
A service for family will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2019 followed by a visitation for friends from 2 to 3 p.m.

Geraldine Lemar Gamboni, 89, of Lynchburg went to be with her Lord on Monday, March 25, 2019. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Lemar of Portsmouth, Va.; her second husband, James Gamboni of Norfolk, Va.; her mother Gladys McKinney Walker of Beckley, WV; brother Channing Walker of Virginia Beach, Va.; sister Flora Halverson of Virginia Beach, Va. and infant grandson Aaron Samuel McBride.
Surviving family members are her daughter Karen Lemar McBride and husband Everett (Sam) McBride; grandson Abram McBride and wife Sarah; granddaughter Sara McBride; and two great grandchildren Ophelia Rose McBride and Walker James McBride.
The family will receive friends at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Heritage Baptist Church on Monday, April 8, 2019.

Sue A. Lewis, 67, of Evington, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2019.
Born December 6, 1951 in Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Marion H. Willis and Velma Benner.
She is survived by her daughter, Tara J. Williams and her husband Jonathan; granddaughter, Cierra Lewis; grandsons, Cameron Lewis and Chris Kidd; sister, Dee Allen and her husband Norman; nieces Pam Lanuis and Sherry Clark; nephew, Michael Gyurnek; cousins, Jackie Fullerton and Peggy Fincher; and extended family members Don and Sandra Williams.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Tharp Funeral Home Lynchburg at 1:00 p.m.

Helen "Lou" Gordon Holt (Lewis)
Helen “Lou” Gordon Lewis Holt, 88, of Lynchburg, died Sunday, March 24, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Langhorne Lewis and Helen Thomas Lewis. Helen was born in Virginia on June 30, 1930.
Surviving family members are her five children, Cecil Talmadge Holt, Jr. (Debbi), Susan Thomas Holt, Charles Langhorne Holt, Verna Holt Moseley (George) and Helen Duncan Holt (Jeff); one sister, Langhorne Lewis McCarthy; three grandchildren, Laura Ann Walker, Sarah Holt Fulmer (Jason) and Charlotte Langhorne Holt and one great-granddaughter, Layla Walker.
The family will greet friends in celebration of her life on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 between 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Oakwood Country Club, 3409 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, VA.

Johnnye R. Phillips
Johnnye Rachel Phillips, 38, of Thaxton formerly of San Diego, CA passed away on Monday, March 25, 2019 at her residence. She was born in Milan, TN, on November 2, 1980. She is the daughter of Deborah and Keith Wise.
Johnnye was free spirited. She loved the land and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She served her country in the United States Navy. She served on the USS Nimitz while in the US Navy. She was very loving and outgoing woman who never met a stranger. She also worked for the Peaks of Otter Winery and Orchard. She was a Brewster and medicinal medicine Dr. She was loved by many and will be missed by all that knew her.
In addition to her parents she is survived by her son, Zakarey Ouellette; half siblings, Kimberly Garcia and Richard Bradley Phillips; step siblings, Matthew Wise and wife, Brittney and Emma Hale; special cousin like a brother, Joshua Matthew Ward; uncle, Paul Ward and wife, Sandy; very close friends, April and Samantha; and her loving dog, Dixie; also surviving are her partner, Levi numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and all of her rainbow family of friends.

Cheryl Dawn Ashwell (Sligh)
Cheryl Dawn Sligh Ashwell, 69, of Lynchburg, died Monday, March 25, 2019. She was the wife of Howard Ashwell for 51 years.
She was born September 27, 1949, in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late James Sligh and the late Roberta Sligh.
She graduated from E.C. Glass in 1967 and attended Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church where she and Howard were married. Cheryl was a homemaker that adored children; while raising her own, she was a caregiver for other children.
In addition to her husband she is survived by her children, Sean Ashwell, Scott Ashwell, Jaime Ashwell Cline (Nyal); a grandson, Max Cline; a brother G.T. Sligh (Cheryl); a sister Brenda Crawford (Kenneth); two sisters-in-law, Mary Dodgion (Ted) and Charlene Blondino (Alan); as well as a host of nieces and nephews she loved dearly.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. in Tharp Funeral Home Chapel, Lynchburg. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Clarence Richard Peters ("Dick" )
Clarence Richard “Dick” Peters, 92, of Roanoke, formally of Bedford passed away on Wednesday, March 27, 2019 at Brandon Oaks Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. He was born in Pittsburg, PA on August 18, 1926 a son of the late Clarence William Peters and Lila Strait Peters. In addition to his parents Dick was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas Eugene Peters and William Leo Hulslander.
Dick served his country in the United States Navy during WWII as a radio operator on a tank landing ship in the Pacific Theater. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic University in 1950 where his active involvement in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity lead to the development of several lifelong friendships. In 1953 Dick met and wed his loving wife Peggy; they were married for 65 years. Dick was a Chemical Engineer with Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati, OH; his career spanned 38 years ending with his retirement in 1989. During retirement, Dick and Peggy enjoyed international travel and visited such places as Africa, China, India, Russia and Brazil. Dick was a member of the Bedford Rotary Club, the Bedford Historical Society and the Peaks Presbyterian Church. Dick enjoyed gardening and attained Master Gardener status through the Virginia Cooperative Extension. Dick was a lifelong sports enthusiast - in his younger years he competed in boxing, skiing, tennis and handball and he was also a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Ohio State Buckeyes.
Dick is survived by his wife, Peggy Jane (Roach) Peters; two children, William Bryant Peters and Jenny Peters and her husband John Walker; also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Mary Frances Evans Tweedy
Mary Frances Evans Tweedy of Lynchburg, Virginia passed away on Friday morning, March 29, 2019 at the age of 92. Born in Concord, Virginia on March 18, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Mary Willie (Mamie) Dickerson Evans and DeWitt Septimus Evans. Mary Frances was the widow of Marvin Cardwell Tweedy, her husband of 68 years.
A graduate of Concord High School, she attended Longwood College and retired from Lynchburg Public Schools after 26 years. Mary Frances was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served in various capacities, including over 20 years on the Wedding Committee. She was a member of the James River Chapter of the DAR, an honorary member of The Woman’s Club of Lynchburg, a member of the Ragged Robin Garden Club, and a former member of the Virginia Baptist Hospital Auxiliary.
Mary Frances enjoyed many years of working in her flower beds, collecting coins and antiques, playing Bridge, and playing and teaching Mah Jongg.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Cardwell Tweedy, two brothers, Thomas DeWitt Evans of Appomattox, Virginia, and Lewis Dickerson Evans of Salem, Virginia and one sister, Virginia Evans Elder of Brookneal, Virginia.
Mary Frances is survived by her daughter, Ann Carol Tweedy Tucker (William Fainter Tucker, Jr. “Bill”) of Hilton Head, South Carolina, one grandson William Fainter Tucker lll (“Will”) of Charlotte, North Carolina, three nieces and four nephews.
A celebration of Mary Frances’ life and faith will be held at 2:00 p.m. on April 6, 2019, at First Presbyterian Church. A reception will be held in the Narthex following the celebration where the family will be able to visit with family and friends.
A private inurnment will take place before the memorial service.

William A. "Bill" Leftwich, Jr.
William A. “Bill” Leftwich, Jr., 91, of Madison Heights, died Friday, March 29, 2019. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife Charlotte Gooch Leftwich, his second wife Nancy Gallaher Leftwich and his step-daughter Edith Gallaher.
Bill was born in Bedford County, Va. on July 13, 1927 to the late William A. Leftwich, Sr. and the late Mary Elett Leftwich. Upon graduation from New London Academy in 1945, Bill joined the U.S. Navy and served in both WWII and the Korean War. After his discharge he was employed as a railway mail clerk until 1960 at which time he became a rural mail carrier in Madison Heights, Va. He retired from mail service in 1982 and devoted the rest of his years to his family and his love of cattle farming.
Bill was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and is survived by his four children: Diane Gryctko (Michael), Marcia Sutler (“W.B.”), James Leftwich (Sue) and Rebecca Leftwich; step-children, Tom Gallaher (Susan), Sue Wax (Marvin) and David Gallaher; grandchildren, Brandon Sutler (Rachael), Susan Silhan (Stephen), Mary Gwendolyn Gryctko (Kyle Blythe), Lauren Gryctko and Aaron Benson; great-grandchildren, Oliver Sutler, Penelope Sutler, Charlotte Silhan and Samantha Silhan.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 from 5-7 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights. A private family celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date.

Carol Jenks Wilson
Carol Jenks Wilson, 80, of Lynchburg, Va., went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, March 29, 2019. She was the wife of the late Lyle Samuel Wilson for 30 years.
Born May 21, 1938, in Orange County, Carol was a daughter of the late Carroll Jenks, and the late Sue Pruitt Jenks.
In addition to Sam, Carol was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Carol Ware, a step son Garnett Wilson, and a grandson, Chris Ward.
Carol is survived by her children: Judy Moore, Susan Brown, Kevin Ware, and Allen Ware, Sam’s children, Patricia “Trickie” Wilson, Larry Wilson, and Renee Eagle; a sister in-law, Etta “Sissy” Wilson; 16 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg, on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Beatrice Mullins
Beatrice Mullins, 93, of Bedford passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Dickenson Co., VA on December 7, 1925. A daughter of the late Vaudie and Pealie Ann Mullins. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Arlie Elmer Mullins and a daughter, D. Joyce Detamore.
Beatrice was a loving mother and grandmother and friend. She loved spending time with her family. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening especially her flowers and she also loved to eat. She was loved by so many and will be missed by all that knew her especially her loving companion and dog, Cody.
Beatrice is survived by six children, Delois McCoy and her husband, Vastine, Reta Ann Blankenship, Loretta S. Parker and her husband, Bob, Donetta VanDyke and her husband, Allen, Ronald Mullins and his wife, Evelyn and Randall Mullins and his wife, Sharon; 17 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; special family member and caretaker, Valerie Agee. Also surviving are numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
A funeral service and celebration of Beatrice’s life will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, April 3, 2019 at Lighthouse Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Daniel Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 11:00am also at the church. Thomas Samluk
Thomas Samluk, 90, of Lynchburg passed peacefully on Sunday, March 31, 2019. He was the beloved husband of Helen Lipowski-Samluk.
He was greatly loved by his children: Mary Ruegamer of Hilton Head, SC, Joseph Samluk of Rochester, NY, Teresa Samluk of Lynchburg, Catherine Samluk-Dall of Ronkonkma, NY, Margaret Legnosky of West Islip, NY, Thomas Samluk of Lindenhurst, NY, and Frances Swanburg of Pensacola, FL.
Thomas was born in Elmhurst, New York on July 15, 1928 a son of the late John Samluk and Helen Sczpanski Samluk. He honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, was retired as a Draftsman Designer with Lambda Electronics in Melville, NY, and was a parishioner of St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
A private committal service for Thomas will take place at St. Thomas More Catholic Church at a later date.

James Gilbert Davis
James G. Davis, 77, of Concord, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday, March 31, 2019 after a three year battle with cancer.
He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Dianne L. Davis and their two children, Kelley Ann Davis of Linden, Va. and Brian Davis of Lynchburg, Va.; a sister Nancy Kudatzky of Medford, NJ; three brothers Jack Davis of Frankford, DE, Richard Davis of Atco, NJ, and Donald Davis of San Leandro, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents Winifred and Gilbert Davis of Delaware.
Jim worked as an electrical draftsman at Limitorque Corp for 36 years before retiring in 2002. He was an avid bowler on different leagues for many years, winning trophies and awards before he had to stop due to his cancer. His real passion was growing his veggies (58 varieties) in his garden and he always planted enough to feed the entire neighborhood. Jim and his wife attended Provident UMC, Rustburg, Va.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Emaculate Tebit and her staff at Alan Pearson Cancer Center for the wonderful care given him during his illness.
Honoring Jim’s wishes, he will be cremated and there will be no church service or visitation.
