Kathleen “Kay” Richardson Greene, 96, passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2019, following a brief battle with cancer, at her home at the Summit in Lynchburg, VA, where she resided for more than 15 years and was one of its first residents. She was born on November 22, 1922, in Buna, TX, youngest of the eight daughters and two sons of Richard Ira Richardson and Helen Caroline Huffman. She joked that she had no given middle name because her parents ran out of names for all of their daughters. Raised on a farm in east Texas, a daughter of early Texas pioneers, she passed up a college scholarship in order to serve the war effort in WWII. She met her future husband, Charles Greene, in 1943 while working in the payroll department at Consolidated Shipbuilding in Orange, TX. He was a young Coast Guard officer assigned to assess the construction of a fleet of LCI(L)s (large landing craft) destined for use in the Allied invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Italy, and ultimately the D-Day invasion. They fell in love and, following his return from combat in the Pacific theatre at the end of the war, were married on November 16, 1945, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Washington, D.C. “Zeke”, as he was known, entered flight training in Texas following their wedding, and they embarked on the adventure of a lifetime as he served as a Coast Guard air-sea rescue pilot, stationed in Massachusetts, Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, Washington state, and Louisiana, ultimately retiring to Connecticut, his home state. Along the way they had two sons, Charles Allan Jr. (“Chuck”), born in Massachusetts, and John Michael (“Mike”), born in Alaska. In 1961 they made the decision to settle down in Waterford, Conn., in order to give their sons a place they could call “home”, and it was a good one. After sampling retirement life in Florida and Virginia Beach, they eventually moved in 1985 to Forest, VA, where son Chuck resided. Kathleen was a past member of The Kirk in Forest. She was an avid quilter and an outstanding seamstress, and served as an election volunteer for many years in both Connecticut and Virginia. She was preceded in death by all of her siblings, her husband Zeke and all of his siblings. She is survived by sons, Chuck and his wife Jackie of Forest, VA, and Mike and his wife Tana of Cornelius, N.C.; grandson, Nathan Ryan Greene and his wife Nancy of Portland, ME; grand-daughter, Kelly Elizabeth Greene of Charlotte, N.C.; numerous nieces and nephews in Texas and elsewhere (as she would say, “There are more Richardson’s than rabbits in Texas!”). The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staffs at the Summit Independent Living and Assisted Living facilities in Lynchburg, and to Centra Hospice and Home Instead for their care. Visitation will be held at Tharp Funeral Home on Friday, May 11, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Virginia Memorial Park in Bedford County. On Wednesday, April 17, 2019, Steven Easterbrook passed away after fighting a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Born on October 14, 1951 in Brooklyn, New York, Steve was an ambitious and talented man who influenced thousands of people and hundreds of organizations around the globe. Steve was an Ivy League-educated entrepreneur, graduating from Cornell University and going on to obtain an MBA from Bryant University. In 2008, he founded a successful and world-renowned business that teaches Fortune 500 companies and government organizations techniques to improve their configuration management processes. He was deeply admired and respected by the many people who knew him well. As a talented guitar player, Steve wrote and performed his own music on a variety of stages, and his original songs could be heard on the radio and in bars around the country. This, in addition to his frequent traveling for work, helped to cultivate his reputation as a hot wing expert.  He could tell anyone where to find the best hot wings, anywhere in the country.  His quick wit and playful humor kept everyone who met him laughing (occasionally confused) and always wanting to hear more. Steve was also a skilled photographer. His photos of landscapes, birds, and other wildlife in the Blue Ridge Mountains earned him awards and recognition from Virginia Wildlife Magazine and National Geographic. He was a man who loved his family, his dog, and the Blue Ridge Mountains that he called home. Steve is predeceased by his parents John R. Easterbrook and Marcia Spinack McCabe. He is survived by his wife Kathy; daughters Kerri, Kristen, and Katie; “adopted” sons Alec Mann and Jessey Gouin; sisters Adrian (Gary) Gregoretti, Lynn (Kevin) Isler, and Tracey McCabe; his four-legged best friend Daisy; as well as many other family members and friends. Steve loved sharing his talents with the world, so please enjoy some of his original music (https://soundcloud.com/steve-easterbrook-music), view his photography (http://yourshot.nationalgeographic.com/profile/889290/), and learn about his company (https://cmpic.com/about.htm). A private service will be held to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in his honor to the Wildlife Center of Virginia (https://www.wildlifecenter.org/donate) or the Lynchburg Humane Society (https://lynchburghumane.org/donations/). Even though Steve is no longer with us, as he always sang, he will continue “Rockin’ while the Blue Ridge Mountains roll.” Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg is assisting the family.   To send condolences, Please visit tharpfuneralhome.com.

Bob Elliott, 67, passed in the evening of April 17th, 2019 at Lynchburg General Hospital after sudden health problems. He leaves his wife Jojo Elliott, daughter Becca, and sons Ian, Conner, and Patrick, and an incredibly loving community. This being Bob's third and final obituary (due to name confusion), we'd like to honor his memory. Bob lived in the Lynchburg/Amherst area most of his life. Though a big personality, he liked the small town feel of the area. Many of you would know Bob as the one to start a conversation, and rarely the one to end it. He'd also be the first one to offer you a beer, whether it was 8pm or 8am. As the owner of the Elliott's Cleaners on Bedford Ave. in Madison Heights, he had the cleanest clothes, but the dirtiest mouth. He was a "people pleaser." Bob cast a huge net in this area. Many people knew Bob, and many people knew very different versions of Bob. He was able to be what you needed, when you needed. There will be no funeral per his wishes. We are planning a gathering at some point to celebrate his life. If you knew Bob, if you celebrated with him in the time he had here, we'd love to hear from you. Memories, moments, and recollections are all accepted. In person deposits can be done at Elliott's Cleaners (Bedford Ave.), or you can email your moments to BobElliottMemories@gmail.com.   Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Madison Heights, is assisting the family.

Alan Marshall Frye, 72, died April 18, 2019, at Liberty Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.  The older son of the Reverend John Marshall Frye, Jr. and Anne Marie Wilson Frye, Alan and his brother Richard spent their childhoods as the sons of an Episcopal priest and his wife, an artist. Eventually, the family settled in Lynchburg, where Alan lived until his death. For many years, Alan was a member of Saint Barnabas Episcopal Church, where he regularly mimeographed and later photocopied the weekly bulletins. Talking with Alan in his later years meant entering a conversation loaded with puns, mechanical metaphors, and vivid memories of family, childhood, cars, contraptions, and Corgies.  His great friend and spiritual mentor, The Reverend Lloyd Lipscomb, helped Alan navigate that world, as did Nancy Downey, his medical and psychosocial advocate for Alan’s last two years.  The family is grateful for their support. Alan leaves behind his brother Richard (Shellion Thomas Frye); two first cousins Sarah Kate Wilson (Paul Petersen) and Susan W. Lyons (Thomas W. Lyons); and two second cousins Michael Timothy Lyons (Elizabeth Lyons) and Stephen W. Lyons (Krista Lindell). The Reverend Lipscomb will celebrate Alan’s life at 3 p.m. on Monday, May 6th, at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church in Bedford, Virginia.  Interment will follow at the church cemetery.   Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
