Phyllis Peters O'Brien

  Phyllis Peters O’Brien, 85, of Lynchburg died Saturday July 16, 2016. She was the loving wife of the late George Edward O’Brien. Phyllis was born in Lynchburg on September 30, 1930 a daughter of the late Eugene Bell Peters and Dorothy Sale Peters. Phyllis was a graduate of Holy Cross Regional Catholic School and was retired from Nationwide Insurance. She was also an active parishioner of Holy Cross Catholic Church. She is survived by her two sons, Mike O’Brien (Tina) of Greensboro, NC, and John O’Brien of Roanoke, three daughters, Teresa O. Wohlford of Lynchburg, Karen O. Knowles of Lynchburg, and Trish O. Strain (Mac) of Charlotte, NC, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Thomas Edward O’Brien, a sister Dorothy M. Peters, one brother Eugene Melvin Peters, and one son-in-law M. Douglas Knowles. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2016 at Holy Cross Catholic Church. A Funeral Mass for Phyllis will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 25, 2016 at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. James Gallagher as celebrant. A reception will follow the service, with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Clay Street Lynchburg, VA 24504. Shirley Hartmann Kirby

Shirley Hartmann Kirby, 80, of Lynchburg, passed away on Sunday, August 7, 2016.  Born on May 22, 1936, in Ohio, she was the daughter of the late John Walter Hartmann and the late Kathryn Lofty Hartmann. Shirley was the loving wife of Vernon Douglas Kirby.  She and Doug were high school sweethearts at Brookville High School, and then went on to lead separate lives for 45 years.  They found each other again and married in March 2000 in a beautiful circle of love. In addition to her beloved husband Doug, Shirley leaves behind to cherish her memory her children, John Browning Odell and his wife Peg of Cooperstown, N.Y., Beth Odell Dunn and her husband Scott of Newport News, Va., and Scott Andrew Odell of Richmond, Va.; her siblings, Nancy Welker and her husband Phil of Roseland, Va., and Raymond Hartmann of Gulfport, Miss.; her eight grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her first husband, Judge John B. Odell of Newport News, Va. For Shirley, nursing was a profession to which she remained faithful throughout her life. A graduate of the Medical College of Virginia with a Master of Science in Nursing, she dedicated many years to raising the profession's next generations as she directed the Riverside Hospital School of Professional Nursing in Newport News.  She also administered other medical programs at Riverside and later served on the state accreditation board for schools of nursing. Through all of this world's joys and tears, Shirley remained a faithful witness of God's love.  She was an active member of First Baptist Church and Orcutt Baptist Church during her years in Newport News, and most recently of Timberlake United Methodist Church in Lynchburg. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 11 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Shirley’s life will take place immediately afterward at 7:30 p.m. in the chapel, with Pastor Brad McMullen and Estelle Holt officiating. Mark D. Murphy, 64 of Augusta, Georgia, formally of Bedford, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, August 9, 2016.  Born May 23, 1952, he was a son of the late Wilbur and Alice Murphy of Bedford. He is also preceded in death by a grandson; Karavi Murphy and a sister; Rachel Minnis.  Mark is survived by his wife, Sheila Murphy; five children: Kyria and Winfred Jeffries, Rashieda, Chandra, and Mark T. Murphy; four grandchildren: Zazmyn Whitfield, Lauryn Terry, Kingston Norman and Matthew Brown; three brothers: Wilbur Murphy and wife, Saguan, Larry Murphy and wife, Peggy and Gerald Murphy; five sisters: Odessa Brown, Maelynn Flemmings and Garfield, Diane Jackson, Glenda Davis and Juan, and Donna Johnson; and a host of relatives and friends.  Funeral service is at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2016 at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford conducted by Donald Fisher. Daisy Wood, 96, of Lynchburg, died Wednesday, August 9, 2016. She was the wife of the late Whittie Thomas Wood. Daisy was born in Campbell County, a daughter of the late George Lee Smith and the late Mary Elizabeth Childress Wood. She was a member of Bethesda Presbyterian Church and retired from G.E. She is survived by her children; Douglas Wood and his wife, Miriam of Lynchburg, Sheila Paxton and her husband, Steve of Huddleston; a brother, Claude Smith and his wife, Wangfei of Roanoke, and four grandchildren. Fredrick "Fred" J. Noble, 91, of Lynchburg, Va., died Wednesday, August 10, 2016. He was the loving husband of the late Gaynelle Ashby Noble. Fred was born Friday, December 12, 1924 in Anderson, Ind., a son of the late Fred Noble and Leafy Harrison. He was retired from Windsor Group Insurance where he was an insurance salesman. Left to cherish Fred’s memory are his daughters, Diana Cocke and Deborah Noble; grandchildren, Josh Gerni and his wife, Angela, Pascha Gerni and Peter Means; great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Sophia, Emma, Liam, and Nate; sister, Sylvia Swinford. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Liberty Ridge for their support during this difficult time. Ashton Casey Shawn Short, 21, of Goode passed away Friday, August 12, 2016. He is survived by his loving family: mother; Shawn Wilson Short; father: Vincent Andrew Short; brothers: Alden Vincent Short and wife, Jennifer, Andrew Jarrett Short; sister: Alainey Nanette Short; paternal grandparents: Sonny and Pat Short; maternal grandparents: Pearl and Jake Gross; god parents: Harvey and Janet Mays; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and so many friends that loved him. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: Wayne Wilson. Ashton was employed with Sentry Equipment. Ashton loved to sing. He was always the life of the party. One couldn’t help but laugh when around him; he lived life to the fullest. Ashton always said he was the cornhole champion. He will be truly missed by all who knew him. Robert M. Bailey (Bob), 84, of Lynchburg passed away on Friday, August 12, 2016. He was born on September 14, 1931, the youngest of ten children, to Edward Smith Bailey and Mary Fannie Bailey. He attended E. C. Glass and was fortunate to play basketball for Jimmy Bryan, who became a role model for him. He earned a basketball scholarship to the College of William and Mary. While there he worked several jobs, including one as an usher for “The Common Glory" where he met Joyce Clingenpeel, who became his wife on June 22, 1957. He was preceded in death by eight of his siblings and is survived by his sister Rebecca (Pat) McQuarry of Lynchburg; his wife Joyce Bailey; his four children: Robert M. Bailey, Jr. (and wife Laura), Mary Elizabeth Wertz (and husband Geoff), Ruth Anne Oertle (and husband Scott), Michael Bryan Bailey; and his 11 grandchildren: Brian McCraw, Chris Bailey, Peter Wertz, Joe Wertz, Cathy Wertz, Katherine Oertle, Sarah Oertle, Joseph Bailey, Jeremy Bailey, Julia Bailey and Diana Bailey. He loved each of them with all his heart. Bob worked in the Lynchburg City Schools as a teacher, coach and administrator until he retired in 1986. Bob was a long time member of First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, where he was active in a variety of roles including Sunday School teacher, Deacon, Elder and Clerk of the Session. Bob loved Smith Mountain Lake and loved to share time with family and friends there. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, August 17, from 7:00 - 8:30 PM at Tharp Funeral Home at 220 Breezewood Drive. A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon, August 18, at 2:00 PM at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Margaret Hite Elder passed away on Friday, August 12, 2016 at Lynchburg General Hospital after a sudden illness. She was born in Covington, VA on December 30, 1935 to Russell R. Hite and Sadie Hite. Margaret suffered through the effects of Polio her entire childhood but still persevered to become a nurse and graduated from Lynchburg General Hospital Nursing School in 1956 and then worked at Lynchburg General Hospital as a RN in the operating room for 44 years before retiring in 2001.   She was also a member of West Lynchburg Baptist Church. Margaret is preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Sadie Hite and her loving husband Walter L. Elder. Margaret is survived by her two sons, Ronnie Elder and wife, Elizabeth of Lynchburg, VA, Kenneth Elder and wife Donna of Evington, VA; four grandchildren, Kristy Seamster and husband Tommy, Ashlee Elder, Cameron Elder and Courtney Elder and four great-grandchildren, Thomas, Cheyenne, Sterling and Ashlyn Seamster.  She is also survived by her sister Anne Hite of Daleville, VA, brother Russell (Buddy) Hite and wife Judy of Mechanicsville, VA and her sister Dottie Ward and husband Jack of Roanoke, VA and her dear friend of many years Betsy Kemp of Lynchburg.   Dorothy Elizabeth DeShazo 91, of Bedford, VA. died Friday, August 12, 2016.  She was born in Orlando, Fla. January 29, 1925, daughter of the late George M. Overstreet and Dessa Burnett Overstreet.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Tazewell DeShazo, Jr. of Roanoke, VA. Left to cherish her memory are two daughters; Deborah DeShazo and Dianne Fain of Bedford; grandson, Israel Fain; granddaughter, Amanda Kimsey and husband, David; great grandchildren, Jaylyn and Braxton Fain; and brother, Lewis Crawford “Bud” Overstreet and wife, Virginia. Dorothy “Dot” was a member of the Bedford Presbyterian Church of Bedford. She served her church as elder, member of Women of the Church, and in charge of floral arrangements for many years. She was a graduate of Longwood College and was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha Sorority. Majoring in english and history, she taught these subjects at Moneta High School in 1947.  She taught in Pine Bluff School system for many years.  Dot was active in various clubs, serving as President of Bedford Garden Club. Dot was a resident of English Meadows for the past year and a half, until discharge to her home with Centra Hospice. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff for the wonderful care she received. The family will receive friends and family from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m on Sunday August 14, 2016 at the residence ( 544 Westview Ave. Bedford, VA). Bobby Ray Epperson, 63, of Brookneal, VA, died Friday, August 12, 2016. Born Sunday, August 17, 1952 in Gladys, VA, Bobby was a son of the late Floyd Dick Epperson and the late Emma Jones Epperson. In addition to his parents, Bobby was preceded in death by two brothers, Hubert Epperson and Thomas Edward Epperson. Angela Marlene Brown, 49, of Evington, VA, died Sunday, August 14, 2016. Born Tuesday, March 21, 1967 in Lynchburg, Angie was daughter of the late William Ralph Brown Jr. and Glenda Dale Hall. In addition to her father, Angie was preceded in death by grandparents William R. Brown Sr., Mildred Moore Brown, and Ethel Adkins Hall. In addition to her mother, Angie is survived by son, William Rhett Brown, of Evington, two grandchildren, Hunter Lee Nash and Carter Daniel Moore, three sisters, Darnell Martin, and her husband, Ryan, of Rustburg, Dina Thacker and her husband, David, of Forest, and Trina Roakes and her husband, Carter, of Rustburg, and her mother’s partner, Mark "Burger" Klein, nieces and nephews, Randi Jackson and her husband Oliver, Jaclyn Staton, Tristan Martin, Gabriel Martin, Grayson Roakes, and Maddox Roakes, and a great niece Ella. Angie’s spirit was too big to be limited to a chair and the bed she unfortunately ended up in. She was lively and always fun loving, with a very caring nature. Angie was thoughtful, forgiving, and always saw the good in others. Angie was loved by all who knew her. Dana Mae Rodgers Tyree, 94, went to be with her Lord, Sunday, August 14, 2016.  Born March 8, 1922 in Campbell Co. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Hilda Rodgers; her husband, Robert W. ; son, Walter Tyree; two sisters, Mary White and Bettie Doss. She is survived by one sister, Ruby Kirby; three sons, Brent Tyree(Carole), Reginald Tyree (Brenda) and Robert Tyree, Jr.; eleven grandchildren, Sherry Campbell, Brandon Tyree, Kevin, Brian and Gregory Daly, Kimberley Lu, Jason Tyree, Reginald Tyree II, Brandis Saunders, Angelia Dooley and Dakotah Hamilton; fifteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. James "Jim" Ray Harmon

James “Jim” Ray Harmon, 69, of Big Island, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Trish Harmon. Born on October 13, 1946, in Tennessee, Jim was a son of the late James G. Harmon and the late Susie M. West Harmon. In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by three daughters, Mary Sue Dayhoff, Jamie Nare, and Mandy Harmon; his step-daughter, Sonya Anderson; his grandchildren; his siblings, Susan Howell, Sheila Partain, Ida Dixon, Shirley Cook, Bill Harmon, and Earl Harmon; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Jim worked as an electrician for Hickey Electric for fifteen years. Outside of work, he enjoyed the outdoors and woodworking, and caring for his goats. He was a beloved friend to many, and will truly be missed by all. A celebration of Jim’s life will take place on Friday, August 26, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home in Bedford with Pastor Brad Bell officiating. Patricia Quackenbush

Patricia Quackenbush passed away peacefully on August 15, 2016 following a long illness. Pat was born on April 15, 1947 in Manhattan, N.Y. to her parents, Bertha and Arthur McBride. She attended SUNY at Potsdam, N.Y., and in 1968, she married Edward Quackenbush. In the 1970s, they settled in Westport, N.Y. where they raised their four children, became the owners and proprietors of Ernie’s Market, and where Pat served on the school board of Westport Central School. Pat later went to work at Elizabethtown Community Hospital, where she developed many close friendships. Before moving to Lynchburg, she resided in Franklin, Tenn. for ten years, and continued her hospital work. She was a volunteer at the Williamson Medical Center's gift shop which she greatly enjoyed. Her biggest joys were her grandchildren. She played an active part in their lives and cherished being "Grandma Pat." She served as a wonderful grandma mentor to her sisters. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Edward and April Quackenbush; her daughter, Jaye McBride; her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Cherie Quackenbush; her son, Brian Quackenbush; seven beloved grandchildren, Colin, Kailey, Riley, Andrew, Bradley, Charlie and Casey; a sister, Jackie Locatelli; a sister and brother-in-law, Maureen McBride and Lee Cline; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Randolph Terracino; many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward and her brother, Arthur McBride. A funeral service and celebration of life will take place Monday, August, 22, 2016 at 12 noon at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, Lynchburg, Va.  Burial at St. Philip Neri Church in Westport, N.Y. will take place at a later date. We have lost a great friend and an all-around good human being. David Crowther Campbell left this life on August 15, 2016, after battling cancer for nearly two years. Born in Lynchburg in 1938, Dave was the son of  Willie Crowther and  Mary Louise Ruhland Campbell. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving on the USS Richard E. Kraus during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He spent his professional career as a member of the Lynchburg Fire Department. It has been said that he was one of the best pumper engineers the city ever had. He is survived by his wife, and truly his soul mate, Janice Hurt Campbell. High school sweethearts, they were married December 12, 1959 and she was at his side when he went home. Additionally, he leaves behind his daughter, Donna Marie Campbell Puyear and her husband, Kenneth; a granddaughter, Heather P. Petrie and her husband, Kirk; two great grandchildren: Jacob Petrie and Bridgette Danielle Petrie; one brother, Timothy Colin Campbell Sr. and his wife, Beverly Hailey Campbell; a niece, Claire Andrews Campbell; a nephew, Timothy Colin Campbell Jr. and his wife, Joanna Tochman Campbell and too many cousins and family extensions to list here. Dave attended public schools in Lynchburg, including Fairview Elementary and E.C. Glass High where he graduated in 1958. He grew up in the family at Fairview Christian Church during the years of John L. Suttenfield and in recent years at the Timberlake Christian Church. There are many people who were touched by Dave’s life of helping protect others and their property. He made more friends than he had years with us. He is remembered for his affection for Studebakers, community support, kindness, and sense of humor. A celebration of life service will be held at Timberlake Christian Church on Thursday, August 18, 2016, with Rev. Robert Mooty officiating. Entombment will follow in Virginia Memorial Park. Robert Henry “Bob” Waugh, Jr., 90, of Lynchburg, passed away Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Westminster Canterbury. He was born February 9, 1926 in Bedford County, VA. He was a son of the late Robert Henry Waugh, Sr. and Olive Pace Waugh. He was a graduate of M.E Marcuse High School, in Big Island, VA class of 1943, and, class of 1950 at Virginia Tech, where he matriculated in engineering, became a Golden Hokie and established a VA Tech Scholarship Fund in his name. Bob loved his family, photography and traveling to every Hokie Football game. He spent most of his 40-year career as a partner and VP of Southern Air, Inc. He was a long time member, served as President, of the Lynchburg Kiwanis Club, where he was instrumental in developing the city-wide recycling program and the Blackwater Creek recreation area that many enjoy today. He maintained a lifelong connection with Kiwanis, serving as Lt. Governor for the state organization.  Bob gave of his time and talents generously with the Central Virginia Training School, Westminster Presbyterian Church as an Deacon and an Elder, Southern Air Inc. PR and many Lynchburg festivals and events. He had four children and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter ‘Ginny’, Virginia Pace Waugh Cless; He is survived by a son, Robert Henry “Corky” Waugh, III, of Arlington, VA, Robin McKibbon Waugh and her fiancé, Robert Grazioli, of Washington DC and John Wranek Waugh and his wife, Tina and their three children, Nicholas, Lucas and Allison of Beverly, Massachusetts; his sister, Anne (Charles) Winder, and his brother, Russell Waugh and his wife, Betty and many special nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made in his honor to First Presbyterian Church of Lynchburg, VA, Virginia Tech and The Fellowship Fund, Westminster Canterbury, 501 V.E.S. Road, Lynchburg, VA 24503. A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 21, 2014 at 2PM at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Peter Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 P.M. at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Dr. Graveside service will be at Big Island Cemetery on Monday at 10AM. Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg is serving the family.

Cheryl Lynn Weaver Williams, 64, of Wirtz, VA, died Thursday, August 18, 2016.  She was the wife of Victor Lawrence Williams. Born November 22, 1951 in West Virginia, she was the daughter of Karl Hannan and the late Emma Black Hannan. In addition to her husband, she is survived by son: Bill DeLong; daughters: Stephanie Vazquez, Lisa Wilson, Julie King; sisters: Carol Powell, Connie Patton, Bev Hannan Estep; brother: Jimmy Weaver; nine grandchildren: Stephen, Heather, Emma, Anna, Liam Carson, Tanner, Shean, Anna; great granddaughter: McKenna. Gwendolyn Anne Holt, 46, of Rustburg, Va., passed away Friday, August 19, 2016 after a short illness. She is survived by her parents, Kenny Holt and Brenda Holt; her sister, Kenda Tufford and brother-in-law, Tim; two nieces, Kailey and Taryn Tufford; and her canine companion, Dakota. She attended Radford University and Graduated from Lynchburg College of Nursing. She excelled as a nurse in all settings and her career was her proudest achievement. In her youth, she was passionate about horses. She dedicated much of her time to her beloved horse, Denver, until he tragically died in an accident. She grew to love dogs in her adult life and had many that she adopted and adored. Gwendolyn had a special connection to music and always felt she was born in the wrong decade. She was a Beatles fanatic and would have loved to attend Woodstock! She had a big heart and loved to help others that were less fortunate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Humane Society for Campbell County Post Office Box 659, Rustburg, Virginia 24588 or National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Virginia Chapter PO Box 8260 Richmond, Virginia 23226-0260. A celebration of Gwendolyn's life will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2016 with Pastor Mike Miller officiating.
