Ernestine Southard Moore, age 79, of Lynchburg, Va. died Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at the Centra Health Hospice House. Born Thursday, May 13, 1937 in Wadesboro, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Ernest Southard and Ruth Karnes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the father of her children, Walter “Nick” Moore, Jr.; three brothers, and a sister. Ernestine leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Vickie Knoll (Tim), Kelly Morris (John), Kaye Giles (Don); seven grandchildren, Melissa Cline, Stephen Knoll, Stephanie Maiewski, Erica Ford, Jessica Raynor, Carrie Tyler, and Pamela Knowles; twelve great-grandchildren, Alex, Sarah, Ashlynn, Scott, Samantha, Caitlee, Victoria, Andy, Renea, Roman, Dean, Hope, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Ernestine retired from Ross Laboratories. She greatly enjoyed helping others at the Lynchburg General Hospital Auxiliary, where she volunteered for over seventeen years. During her spare time, she enjoyed sewing and spending time with her family.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. A visitation will take place Thursday, March 16, 2017 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Centra Hospice.

Mary B. Anderson
Mary Anderson, a long time Lynchburg resident, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. She was 96 years old. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Millard O. Anderson. Mary was a devout Christian and a devoted and beloved daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was born on November 29, 1920 in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, the daughter of Victor H. and Ethel B. Boettcher. Upon graduation from Charleston High School in Charleston, West Virginia in 1939, Mary enrolled in Randolph-Macon Woman’s College, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. In January 1940, she attended a Cotillion Club dance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute where she met her husband to be, Cadet Millard O. Anderson. The next fall, Millard was selected to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point. They were married at West Point on June 1, 1943, following Millard’s graduation. Mary graduated from Randolph-Macon a few days later and they began life as a military family.
Millard’s active duty military career in the Air Force took them and their growing family all over the world. They lived in Germany, New York, Virginia, Arizona, Turkey, Texas and finally back to Virginia. Life came full circle when Millard retired from the Air Force and took a job at Babcock & Wilcox in Lynchburg, Virginia, his hometown and location of Mary’s alma mater, where she was a member of the first docent class for the Maier Museum. The family was made complete when Mary’s mother Ethel Tucker also moved to Lynchburg. Mary was active at Court Street United Methodist Church and Oakwood Country Club. She volunteered at the Linkhorne Elementary School Library and was on the board of the YWCA. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader. Mary loved to travel and visit the friends she and Millard made all over the world and she filled her home with unique and treasured collectibles from the special places she and her family lived during their travels. Mary was a dear friend to many and loved her bridge luncheons and sharing her love of cats and game shows with her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by her son, Millard O. Anderson, Jr., his wife Mary Katherine and their children Margaret, Kathy, Carol and Millard III; by her son Richard V., his wife Carol and their children Beverly and Blake; by her daughter Lisa Anderson-Lloyd, her husband Rob and their children Mary and Wesley; and by her daughter Julie Anderson Brennan, her husband Jay and their children Robbie and Billy Pence. She is survived by 10 grandchildren: Margaret Moody, Carol Jones, Katherine Carmichael, Millard O. Anderson, III; Beverly Blair, Blake Anderson; Mary Lloyd, Wesley Lloyd; Robbie Pence and Billy Pence. She is survived by 14 great grandchildren: Buzz, Molly, and Melanie Moody; Jeffery Jones and Hannah Jones Goode; Charlie Byrd and Mary Elizabeth Pinckard; Bo and Camille Anderson; Brantley and Virginia Blair; Kyle and Elise Lloyd and Sawyer Lloyd and Jasmine Howell. She is also survived by a great-great grandson, Price Lon Harris.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 2:00 pm at Court Street Methodist Church, the Reverend Burleigh officiating.

Shirley Brooks Mitchell
Shirley Brooks Mitchell of Midlothian, Va. departed this life March 15, 2017. She was raised in Lynchburg, Va. and a graduate of E.C. Glass High School. Shirley retired from a forty year career with Barker and Jennings as the administrative assistant to Mr. Barker, himself. She was a devoted member of Memorial Christian Church in Lynchburg and actively participated in Relay for Life for many years. She truly loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who called her “Grandma Shirley”. Shirley loved to knit and made sweaters for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Mitchell; and her two brothers, Clyde Brooks and William “Billy” Brooks. She is survived by her sister, Frances Moore; her two children, Deborah Brewer and Barry Mitchell (Betty); four grandchildren, Tyler Brewer (Terra), Shannon Mitchell, Matthew Brewer (Kortney), and Erin McGarity (Mark); eight great-grandchildren Luci Chiavaroli; Paxton, Layton, and Nathan Brewer; Lincoln and Stella Brewer; Sadie and Foster McGarity; and eight nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, 2017. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Relay for Life.

William John Parks, Sr.
William John Parks, Sr. 67, of Thaxton, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2017. He was the loving husband of the late Dorothy Tavernier Parks.
Born March 31, 1949, he was a son of Jessica Suey Parks and the late William Henry Parks.
William retired from Rock Dale Quarry, he was a heavy equipment operator.
William was the best father in the world. He would give you the shirt off of his back. He loved to turn wrenches and go fast.
He is survived by his son: William John Parks, Jr.; daughters: Mary Ellen Phillips, Penelope Burns, Melissa Waldron and husband, Michael, Jessie Lynn Parks; 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother: Robin Clayton Parks and wife, Dorothy; and sister: Jessica Torres and husband, Isaac.

Allen Carroll Brooks Sr.
Allen Carroll “A.C.” Brooks Sr., 68, of Lynchburg, Va., passed away peacefully at his home Friday, March 17, 2017. He was the loving husband and high school sweetheart of Mary Beth (Toby) Brooks.
A.C. was born July 14, 1948, in Lynchburg, Va., a son of the late Reva T. Williams and loving stepfather Bill Williams. He was retired from NCR and Charity Games where he worked a Sales Account Manager. He grew up in College Hill Baptist Church and later was a member of First Baptist Church. A.C. was the life of the party and loved to make everyone laugh. He enjoyed playing golf with family and friends and was usually working a crossword puzzle throughout his day. He had a deep respect for his country and was a member of Moose Lodge 715, the American Legion and proud associate member of the Marine Corps League.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Allen C. (Cary) Brooks, Jr. (Jennifer) of Lynchburg, Va. and Lori E. Brooks (Dave) of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; two grandchildren, Vanessa Coraline Brooks and Chelsea Lisbeth Brooks; one great-grandchild, RJ Bowers III; nephews, Christopher and Bobby Brooks and their families; nieces, Kathryn Saine, Mary-Lyons Ickert and their families; and his best four-legged pals Daisy and Ginny.
In addition to his mother and step-father, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Billy Brooks and Gilbert Brooks and loving family friend Mary Thompson.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg. A celebration of A.C.’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2017, at Tharp Funeral Chapel with Rev. Paul Dakin and Dr. James A. Weaver officiating.

Hugh Edward "Eddie" Owen
Hugh Edward “Eddie” Owen, II, 67 of Forest passed away on March 18, 2017. He was born in Danville, VA on February 27, 1950. He was the son of the late Hugh Edward Owen and Eleanor Tanner Owen.
Eddie retired from Hanwha Azdel as a lab technician. He was an avid enthusiast of motorcycles and trains, especially steam engines, and often visited transportation museums. He enjoyed the outdoors especially fishing and watching NASCAR.
Eddie is survived by loving friend, Frances McCanless; his two Godsons, Brian McCanless and Brandon Booker; three friends who were like brothers, Donald Booth, David Hankins and Mike Hankins; also numerous other friends.

Karla Renee Mercy, 51 of Roanoke, Virginia lost her battle with cancer at her home surrounded by her family on Saturday, March 18, 2017. She is preceded in death by her father Fredrick F. Ely, Grandmother Deta Hylton and nephew Baby Jackie.
She leaves behind her husband Scott Mercy, daughter and Son-In-Law Kristen & Chris Doss, Son’s Justen Pugh & Austin Mercy and grandson’s James Elijah Pugh and Zachary Hunter Doss, Her mother LaWanda Ely, Sister and Brother-In-Law Stacey and Eddie Thornhill.

Rev. Patrick James Simon
Reverend Patrick James Simon, 80, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, March 18, 2017.
Born on April 17, 1936 in Columbus, Ohio, he was the son of the late Bernard R. Simon and the late Annamae McDonald Simon.
Reverend Simon grew up in the Catholic Church and later served as a Methodist Pastor for the United Methodist Church. He received his Doctorate of Ministry from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary and became a Methodist Minister in 1994. His last church for which he was the pastor was Shiloh United Methodist Church in Forest, Va. He retired in the early 2000’s after leading several to the Lord and always presenting the gospel.
He loved to ice skate as a teenager and played football in high school. He was also a DJ in the 60’s and 70’s.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War as well as on the U.S.S. Franklin D. Roosevelt Aircraft Carrier (CVA-42).
He is survived by his sister Sally Ohler; his nieces Kelly Tankersley, Brenda Lybrand, and Eileen Carpenter; his nephew Wayne Paul Ohler; and nine grandnieces and grandnephews and their families.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby “Grace” S.R. Simon.
A celebration on Reverend Simon’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg followed by a graveside service with military honors will be held at Culpeper National Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.

Linda Johnson Porter
Linda Johnson Porter, 68, of Lynchburg, died Monday, March 20, 2017. She was the loving wife of Randy Rhodes for over 30 years.
Linda was born June 16, 1948 in Wilmington, North Carolina the daughter of the late John Alexander Johnson, Sr. and Elizabeth White Johnson. She loved the coast and spent her childhood shrimping, fishing, and shelling with her parents to supply her family's seafood shop. She pursued a career as a hairdresser after high school and beauty school. Her love of children and art then led her to become a teacher's assistant and art teacher. In later years, she opened a hand painted furniture and crafts store in Southport, NC.
She moved to Lynchburg after her first grandson was born and never ever missed a step that her grandchildren took. She was a member at Centenary United Methodist Church heavily involved with the children, youth, JIFF programs, and all family programs. She loved baseball and watching Lynchburg Little League games where you never doubted which kids were her grandchildren. She was known throughout the community for her cooking skills, her resilience, her friendship, her fierce love for her family, and her inability to say “No” to her grandchildren.
In addition to her significant other, she is survived by her daughter Angela P. Campbell and her husband Tim of Lynchburg; and her grandchildren and best friends: Kane, Cooper and Callen; her step-son Ryan Rhodes and his wife Christina of Chadburn, NC, and their children: Brayden and Carly; and one brother John Alexander Johnson, Jr. of Wilmington, NC.
A Celebration of Linda’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Centenary United Methodist Church 1501 Rivermont Avenue Lynchburg, VA, 24503 with the Rev. Doug Gonzales officiating. A reception will follow in the church fellowship hall.

Edith H. Callahan
Edith H. Childers Callahan passed away Monday, March 20, 2017 due to complications from a fall. She was born in Spout Spring on December 21, 1923. She was preceded in death by her first husband, William “Clint” Childers; her second husband, Joseph “Paul” Callahan; her parents, Eugene Watson and Louise Ballowe Harris; and her three brothers Clayton, Robert, and Eugene W. Harris, Jr.
Left to mourn her passing are her daughters, Joan F. Burnham (Lyn Williams), and Patricia G. “Patsy” Dalton (James); four grandchildren: Kathy L. Thomas (Ed), Greg D. Frye (Theresa), Melanie J. Hall, and Dallas W. Gray (Leslie); and ten great-grandchildren.
Edith graduated from Appomattox High School in 1941 and Mayfair Beauty College in 1942. She was owner and operator of Edith’s Beauty Shop on Old Forest Road in Lynchburg. She then worked at General Electric Co., Mountain View Plant in the crystal and print wire areas. Edith then graduated from Earl McFarland School of Floristry in Raleigh, N.C. and was owner and operator of Edith’s Flower Hut.
She was an active member of Forest Road United Methodist Church for over 60 years. She was recognized By Ruritan National in 1987 as outstanding club president of the year of Forest Hill Ruritan Club and was the first female president of a ruritan club in Virginia. As an avid bowler, she participated in numerous tournaments in Virginia and other states. Edith participated in Senior Citizens Golden Olympics winning medals in basketball, jump rope, volleyball, and other events. She played volleyball for fun well into her eighties and loved to square dance on Friday and Saturday night.
Visitation will be held on Thursday night, March 23, 2017, from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 24, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Road United Methodist Church by Reverend Ray Buchanan with visitation one hour prior. Graveside services will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Edith Lucille Mannon
Edith Lucille Mannon, 81, of Gladys, VA. passed away Monday, March 20, 2017. She was a daughter of the late John Wesley and Georgia Massengill Smith. Surviving are her husband, Lewis Lee Mannon; sons, William “Bill” Oakley and his wife Lynn, John Mannon, Michael Oakley and his wife Kathy; and five grandchildren: William, Scarlett, Brandon, Helen, and Sara. Also, she is survived by her brother Doug Smith; and sisters Betty Cheshire, Sue Carter, Irene Smith-Grubb, and Jimmy Lawrence.
Edith was a devoted mother whose greatest passion in life was raising her three children and watching her five grandchildren blossom. Her warm and caring presence will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched.
A memorial service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home’s Lynchburg Chapel at 1 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Donnie Tomlin Crawford, 91, of Lynchburg, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, March 20, 2017 after a long battle with cancer.
Born September 1, 1925 in Coleman Falls, she was the daughter of the late Linwood W. Tomlin and Josie Tomlin of Big Island.
She was retired from General Electric and enjoyed crocheting and making quilts and other handmade items to give to family and friends.
She was previously a member of Fairview United Methodist Church for fifty years, where she was a member of the choir and a Sunday School teacher. She also assisted with Bible School crafts. She was a member of Helping Hands and Quilt & Chatter. She was most recently a member of Jordan Baptist Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir.
Donnie is survived by her husband of sixty-one years, Joseph E. Crawford; a daughter, Linda F. Davidson of Lynchburg; a daughter, Sandy Searcy and husband Mike of Colorado; four grandchildren, Waverly Scott Davidson of Evington, Tammy Milford and husband Scott of Lynchburg, Traci Glantz and husband Todd of Colorado; Richard Jenks, (Noelle) of Colorado, two great-grandchildren of Colorado; and two sisters, Josie Harris of Rustburg, and Audrey Whorley of Big Island.
Donnie was preceded in death by sisters, Grace Irvin Tomlin, Pearl Aireson, and Minnie Oliver; and brothers, Grover Tomlin, Jerry Tomlin, Jessie Tomlin, Willard (Bill) Tomlin, and C. Edward Tomlin.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017 at Jordan Baptist Church. A celebration of Donnie’s life will follow at 12 p.m. Friday, March 24, 2017 at Jordan Baptist Church in Lynchburg with the Rev. Melvin Campbell officiating. Interment will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park.

Ralphine Overstreet (Coffey)
Ralphine Coffey Overstreet passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, at her home in Forest, Virginia, at the age of 101. Born April 20, 1915, in Bedford County, she was the last survivor of the nine children of Hugh Davis Coffey and Lillian Cox Coffey. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Maurice Gank Overstreet; her granddaughter, Elizabeth Hope Lee; and her son-in-law, H. Clark Lee. She is survived by her daughters, Carol Lee of Forest and Anne Gerhardt (Tom) of Lynchburg. Surviving also are her six grandchildren, Melissa Mitchell (Glenn) of Walnut Cove, NC, Jonathan Lee of Forest, Carter Lee of Lynchburg, Troy Gerhardt (Lisa) of Fort Collins, CO, Erich Gerhardt (Julie) of Lynchburg and Graham Gerhardt (Emily) of Birmingham, AL. She is survived by seven great-grandchildren: Bryson and Ethan Gerhardt, Sara Anne “Lilli”, Finley and Quincy Gerhardt, Amber Harris (Lee) of Pfafftown, NC and Jordan Mitchell of Walkertown, NC; and two great-great-grandchildren, Christian and Chloe Harris. A very special Niece, Donna Harman Templeton of Marietta, GA. Also surviving her is a special friend and “adopted” sister, Annice Williams.
Ralphine was the cafeteria manager at Brookhill Elementary School for many years. Students there still recall her goulash, homemade bread, and preacher candy. She was a lifelong member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Forest. She served in many positions at Bethany. Every Sunday, all the children at Bethany would gather around her for a hug and, if it was their birthday, a little green surprise. She especially enjoyed her service in the United Methodist Women. Ralphine was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, friend to all, and a faithful servant of Jesus Christ.
Her family would like to thank her caregivers for their excellent assistance over the last few years. They were attentive to her needs and encouraged her to work hard to do things for herself.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Bethany Church with visitation at 10:00 a.m, service at 11:00 a.m., and a luncheon to follow. Rev. Dr. H.O. Elizabeth W. Roberts
Elizabeth Whitten Roberts, 95, of Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at Bedford County Nursing Home. She was born on March 17, 1922 in Montvale, VA. She was a daughter of the late Samuel E. Whitten and Annie Garrett Whitten. Liz was quite patriotic and proud to have worked at the Radford Arsenal and the U. S. Post Office in Montvale during WWII. She was retired from Rubatex Corporation in Bedford and was a devoted member of the Bedford Baptist Church. Liz enjoyed her family, was an avid cook, a life-long Democrat, and a member of the Bedford County Electoral Board. She loved crocheting, politics and anything that interested her sons.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Hubert Arthur Roberts; two brothers, Samuel Virgil Whitten and Edward James Whitten.
Elizabeth is survived by her three sons, Chester Arthur Roberts of Richmond, VA, Robin Vincent Roberts of Safety Harbor, FL and Curry Alan Roberts of Richmond, VA; one sister, Ernestine Whitten Smith of Roanoke, VA, three daughters in law, Margaret Roberts, Sherry Roberts and Irene Roberts, numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

A funeral service and celebration of her life will be conducted at 11:00 on, Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Chapel in Bedford with Rev. Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Burial will follow services in Virginia Memorial Park in Forest. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 from 5:30 pm until 7:00 pm at Tharp Funeral Home.
