Betty Seay Bryant, 74, of Madison Heights went to be with the Lord, Sunday, March 26, 2017. She was the loving wife of Robert A. Bryant for 49 years. Betty was born June 1, 1942 in Lynchburg, a daughter of the late John Daniel Seay and Evelyn Robertson Seay. Betty was retired as a hairdresser and was an active member of Thomas Road Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by her two sons, Forrest Dale Bryant and his wife Diane of Elon, and Ashley Daniel Bryant of Madison Heights; one brother, Allen Seay of Forest; four grandchildren; and her special boss, Sylvia Cooper. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home, Madison Heights. A celebration of Betty’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 29, 2017 in Pate Chapel at Thomas Road Baptist Church with Pastor Roy Newman and Pastor Tommy Willis officiating. Callie Margaret Parish Newton

Callie Margaret Parish Newton died peacefully while holding her son’s hand in the early morning hours Sunday March 26 at Westminster Canterbury, Lynchburg, Virginia at the age of 89 years after a protracted illness. She joins her loving husband Arlindar Cleveland Newton and their first son Cleveland Dave Newton, her parents, and all of her beloved sisters and brothers. She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Drs. Richard and Grace Newton of Lynchburg, Virginia, her grandson Dr. Alexander Newton of Saylorsville, Pennsylvania and her granddaughter Anna Newton of Atlanta, Georgia and numerous loving nieces and nephews in Mississippi. She spent most of her life in Crystal Springs, Mississippi where she loved her family, and adored living in her rural home. Gardening and her pets were her loves. It was important for her to provide meals to all who visited and she relished sharing her plants with anyone who was willing to plant one in their own yard. She spent the last years of her life in Lynchburg, Virginia with her son and daughter in law where she continued to give love, smiles and hugs. She will be missed more than she could have imagined and by more people than she could have imagined. There will be a brief grave side service at Old Crystal Springs Cemetery at approximately 1PM where her ashes will be interred. Visitation with her immediate family will follow at the First Presbyterian Church at 316 Marion Ave, Crystal Springs, Mississippi. Memorial donations would be welcome at First Presbyterian Church, Crystal Springs, Mississippi or to Meals on Wheels Lynchburg VA 605 Clay St, Lynchburg, VA 24504 in lieu of flowers. Raymond Charles Wood, 17, of Lynchburg, Va., died Monday, March 27, 2017. Raymond was born Wednesday, June 30, 1999 in Lynchburg, Va. He was a senior at Heritage High School. He enjoyed listening to and writing music while spending time with his older brother. He also enjoyed traveling and visiting his family. Raymond is survived by his parents, Michael Pierce Wood, Marjorie C. Stagno and step-father, Christopher Robey; brother, Michael Joshua Wood; maternal grandmother, Mary Jane Stagno; paternal grandparents, Carolyn Davis and Joe Davis; four uncles, Dale Wood, James Gillispie, Jr., Robert West, Jr., John Franza; four aunts, Rosemarie West, Christina Franza, Maria Winkworth, Jennifer Wood; 14 cousins; a close family friend, Ashley Noble. He was preceded in death by both grandfathers, Robert “Bobby” Wood and Raymond Charles Stagno, who he was named after; also, his Uncle David Salvatore Stagno II. Philip James Garbarini, Jr., 90 of Bedford, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, March 27, 2017. He was born on October 22, 1926 in New York City to Della and Philip Garbarini.  He grew up on Staten Island, attended public school and St. Peter's High School, and graduated from Manhattan College with a degree in business. After working for several textile firms in New York City, he had the opportunity to move to Virginia to manage a textile mill for Belding Heminway.  He and his family moved from New York to Bedford, Virginia in 1968. In 1982 he purchased the mill where he became owner and president. He remained active in his business until one month prior to his death.   Phil was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Doris. He is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Eileen, four children, Clair (Gil) Halasz, Nancy (Andy) Vest, Philip (Virginia), Mark (Karen); seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) McFarland, Katie, Anthony, Laura, Benjamin, Christopher and Ashley Garbarini, and sister Anne Friis-Skotte.   In his spare time, Phil was involved in various endeavors including cattle farming, working on cars and refurbishing his wooden boat, Nomad.  He was always accompanied by his Golden Retriever, JD.  However, his greatest love was his family.  He looked forward to Sunday and holiday dinners when all his children and grandchildren were with him.  He will be missed.  The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers, Bea, Rosa, Theresa P., Terisa H. and Lyn whose kind, compassionate and loving care he received during the last few months of his life.   The family will receive friends at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.   Funeral Mass will be held Friday, March 31, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church with Father  Salvador Añonuevo officiating.  Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church Building Fund, Bedford Rescue Squad or Bedford Volunteer Fire Department.   To send condolences online please visit www.tharpfuneralhome.com. Fred Dennis Thornhill, Sr. departed this life on March 30, 2017. He was born October 15, 1936 in Fincastle, Va. to the late Fred Johnson Thornhill and Dollie Ann Gusler Thornhill. Fred was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, son, and granddaughter. He was a longtime employee at Appalachian Power Company in Lynchburg and Scottsville, Va. Fred was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and husband. He leaves to cherish his memory one son, Fred Dennis Thornhill, Jr.; two daughters, Gail Marie Markowski and her husband, Michael, of Monroe, Va. and Wanda Lynn Akers and her husband, Tony, of Rustburg, Va.; his wife and best friend, Mary Thornhill of Monroe, Va.; twelve grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren, and two aunts, Marybell Johnson of Fincastle, Va. and Violet Tyree of Roanoke, Va. Fred loved to hunt, fish, camp, ride four-wheelers, and spend time with his family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Esther Thomas Licht, 98, of Forest, Va., passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 30, 2017. Born November 27, 1918 in Deshler, Neb., Esther was the daughter of the late John Unbehaun and Amanda Eitzman Unbehaun.  In addition to her parents, Esther was preceded in death by her husbands, Elwood B. Thomas and Carl E. Licht. Esther is survived by her son, Charles B. Thomas and daughter-in-law, Rita Dowling, and her daughter, Betty Jo Gardner, and son-in-law, David R. Gardner, all of Forest.  She has four grandchildren, Chad Thomas (wife, Brandy Freechak) of Hiram, O; Brooke Thomas (fiancé, Brandon Rawot) of Cincinnati, Ohio; Chris Gardner (wife,Erin Gardner) of Dallas, TX and Brad Gardner (wife, Emily Gardner) of Bristow, Va. Her six great-grandchildren are Taylor and Tanya Thomas, Blaine Prusa, Tyler and Ethan Gardner and Kaitlin Gardner. She has one great-great-grandchild, Elizabeth Rowland. Esther previously lived in Elgin, Ill. for many years where she was an active volunteer for several clubs and service organizations. These include the March of Dimes, Junior Service Board, Newcomers Club, Valley Garden League, Sherman Hospital, PTA and Travel Class.  She loved gardening and music. The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at Forest Presbyterian Church, followed immediately by a celebration of Esther's life, conducted at 5 p.m. with Rev. Morgan Whitfield officiating. A light supper will follow. Betsy Moses Davidson, 67, of Forest, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 1, 2017. Born in Lynchburg on May 20, 1949, she was a daughter of the late James Edward Moses, Sr. and the late Betty Ann Tramell Moses. Betsy is survived by her daughter, Melissa Staggs (Paul); two sisters, Jane Campbell (Melvin), Bonnie Moses Bryant (Barry); brother, James Edward Moses, Jr.; three grandchildren, Jacob Davidson, Hannah Staggs and Madison Staggs; uncles, Clarence Moses and Dickie Moses; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members. She diligently worked as the Manager of Flower’s Baking Co. until she retired. She was a very spirited lady who was also kindhearted and selfless. She loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and always put her family before herself. In her spare time, Betsy enjoyed reading, and drawing. A memorial service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home’s Lynchburg Chapel at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 6, 2017 with Chaplain Wayne Lanham officiating. Robert William Taylor

Robert William Taylor, 73, of Lynchburg, Virginia, passed away on April 1, 2017 after an extended illness. The funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM at Timberlake Baptist Church on April 7, 2017. Pastor Larry Brodie of Timberlake Baptist Church will be officiating. Visitation will be held at 1:00 PM on April 7, 2017 at Timberlake Baptist Church. Burial will follow the funeral at Fort Hill Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Tharp Funeral Home. Robert was born in Skyler, Virginia on December 17, 1943. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War. After his return home for Vietnam, he worked at many different jobs, but finally settled with Centra at Guggenheimer Skilled Nursing Facility for 23 years. Throughout his life, he restored older homes to their former beauty. He always said that he was a "jack of all trades, but a master of none." His gentle and loving nature made him the perfect Santa for many around Lynchburg. He always had a smile for the children and an ear to listen when it was needed with his friends. He was a gifted story-teller and enjoyed telling his stories along with a bible teaching or two to go with it. He loved to cook, and was always trying out new recipes on the members of his church. Robert also was an avid fisherman and loved the great outdoors. His gentle and loving nature extended to animals, and he always had a cat at his side. He actively volunteered as much as possible, and was a devoted member of Timberlake Baptist Church. Robert is survived by his wife, Cynthia (Carroll) Taylor, his daughter, Cherish Van Schaik (Michael), 3 grandchildren: Nicole Little, Justin Heath, and William Heath. Sister Phyliss Croaker and a niece Patricia Bolton. Special mention for Wendell Carwille, his best friend and a honorary member of the family; Nancy Erby and JD Vance, two friends that were there with Robert throughout the years and also are considered members of the family; and the rest of his relatives and friends. Robert was a devoted and loving husband, father and friend that will be missed by all that knew him.

Susie Gillespie Weiss, 93, of Bedford passed away on Thursday, April 6, 2017 at Bedford Co. Nursing Home. She was born on January 4, 1924 in Ada, WV. A daughter of the late James M. Gillespie and Sallie Robertson Gillespie. In addition to her parents Susie was preceded in death by her loving husband, Frank Garlin Weiss; two brothers and five sisters. Susie loved spending time with her family especially the light of her life a grandson Andy. She was a previous member of the Eastern Star and loved cooking. The family would like to say how grateful they are for the love and compassion shown by the Bedford Co. Nursing Home and Bedford Centra Hospice group for all the wonderful care giving to Susie. It will never be forgotten. Susie is survived by her daughter, Loretta W. Ulch; grandson, Andrew “Andy” Ulch; also numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Bobby Landon Spence, 84, of Big Island, Va., died Thursday, April 6, 2017.  He and his wife, June Spence, shared 64 years of marriage. Bobby was born Wednesday, November 23, 1932 in Bastrop, LA, a son of the late William (Bill) Lewis Spence and Hallie Burks Spence. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gene Spence and sister, Faye Ramsey. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Coolbaugh during the Korean War. He retired from Georgia Pacific where he diligently worked as an E.I. technician. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Steven L. Spence and wife, Diana, Cliffside, N.C.; daughters, Julia Johnson and husband, Richard, Glen Allen, Va. Yvonne St. Clair and husband, Allen, Glasgow, Va., and Cathy Harris and husband, Don, Rustburg, Va.; sisters, Betty Waugh, Lynchburg, Va., Sandra Spence, Lynchburg, Va.;  grandchildren, David, Stephanie, Melanie, Emily, Alex, Sarah and Jessica.; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his mother, Bruce is also survived by his two brothers: C. V. Arrington, Jr. and his wife, Rhonda, Barry Ray Arrington; and two sisters: Janet A. Thomas Ray Andrews, 45 of Blue Ridge, VA passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Roanoke on July 2, 1971. He is the son of the late Paul Ronald Andrews and Virginia Carol Martin Andrews. Tommy was a wonderful carpenter. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time at his home place. Tommy was survived by his daughter, Angel S. Andrews and fiancé, Drew; siblings, Sherry and Wes Keen, Boyd and Vicki, Tim and Sherrie Andrews, Ann Andrews, Jeff and Nadine and a special aunt Jean Jennings; also numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Jeanne Marie Clubb, 89, of Lynchburg, Va., died Saturday, April 15, 2017. She was the loving wife of the late William Anthony Clubb for 55 years. Jeanne was born Wednesday, December 28, 1927 in Syracuse, N.Y., a daughter of the late Jerry Vollmer and Bessie Vollmer. Jeanne was a warm and kind woman who dedicated much of her time to her family. Jeanne was avid about caring for and helping others, and spent much of her time volunteering with Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg Nursing Center, Mended Hearts, and Cavalry Baptist Church, of which she was a member. She also greatly enjoyed baking, particularly cakes, which she decorated exquisitely. Jeanne was a talented seamstress and created beautiful table runners and cloth children’s books which she sold at craft fairs. Jeanne is survived by her two children, Mike Clubb (Inez Costa-Clubb) and Pat Jackson (Jack); four grandchildren, Michelle Lancaster (Mike Pomfret), Tony Jackson, TC Clubb, April McAllister (Steve); three great grandchildren, Penelope McAllister, Oscar McAllister, and Max Pomfret. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home, Lynchburg. A celebration of Jeanne's life will follow at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Chapel, Lynchburg with Rev. Mark W. Beck officiating. Matthew Davis Farmer 18, of Forest passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Richmond, VA on October 1, 1998. He is the son of Stacy C. Minter and David L. Farmer. Matthew loved the outdoors and enjoyed running, fishing and playing softball. He was a senior at Jefferson Forest High School. He also was a member of the JROTC program. Matthew is survived  by his mother, Stacy C. Minter and her husband, James; his father, David L. Farmer and wife, Crystal; brother, Jeffrey Nelson Farmer; maternal grandparents, James and Ann Wood; paternal grandparents, Larry and Sue Farmer and also numerous other family and friends. Matthew was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ronald Nelson Childress.
