Everett Gabathuler

Everett Gabathuler, son of Andrea and Philipp Gabathuler, went to be with the angels in heaven on April 16, 2017. Though his time on earth was short, he showed those that loved him what it means to love unconditionally. Everett was a gift from God to reveal the goodness of His blessings. To cherish his memory, he leaves his mother, Andrea; his father, Philipp; and sister, Willow; his aunts and uncles, Meggan Saul of Howell, Mich., Chelsi Maddy of Evington, Brienne and Felix Gabathuler of San Jose, Costa Rica, Stephanie Gabathuler of Arlington, Va. and Chase Maddy of Rustburg; as well as his grandparents, Duane and Elaine Maddy of Rustburg, and Urs and Michaela Gabathuler of Lynchburg. He is also survived by his great-grandparents Melvin and Jennie Wilson of Lynchburg, Hedwig Gabathuler of Steckborn, Switzerland, and Carole Demas of Pittsburgh, Pa. A prayer service will be held at Tharp Funeral Home on Friday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m. The family will receive their friends preceding the service from 5 to 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Everett’s honor to Lynchburg Grows. Rodney Kent Pelletier, 76, of Forest, VA (formerly of Kankakee, Illinois) died Sunday, April 16, 2017. He was the husband of Sandra Rae Pelletier. Rodney was born November 15, 1940 in Kankakee, Illinois a son of the late Ralph Pelletier and Isabelle Shipley Pelletier, and brother of the late Ralph Pelletier, Jr.   Rodney retired from Armstrong World Industries in 2000 after more than 35 years of service, was an avid tennis player, enjoyed classical music, and was a stained glass artisan, producing many Tiffany stained glass designs, including an eight by ten foot baptismal scene at Immanuel Baptist Church in Kankakee, Illinois where he was a member and sang in the choir. In addition to his wife of 57 years, he is survived by his children: Tami Pelletier Guard and her husband Randy of Valparaiso, IN, Teresa Pelletier of North Judson, IN, Tracy Pelletier and wife Evi of Bremerhaven, Germany, Matthew Pelletier and wife Pamela of Forest, VA, one brother Vince Pelletier and wife Shirley of Phoenix, AZ, a sister-in-law Beverly Pelletier of South Bend, IN, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 at Tharp Funeral Home, 220 Breezewood Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24502. Catherine “Cathey” D. Wilson, 67, of Lynchburg, Va., died Wednesday, April 19, 2017. Cathey was born Saturday, May 14, 1949 in Lowell, Mass., a daughter of the late Robert Donnelly and Diane Dadley. Cathey was retired and an active member of Blue Ridge Community Church and especially enjoyed the Journey Senior’s Group. She was also a dedicated volunteer at Lynchburg Pulmonary Associates. Cathey is survived by two daughters, Angela Fox and husband Milton of Evington; Tonya Massie of Rustburg; a special niece, Tammy Fuller; and a sister-in-law, Gail Donnelly of Janesville, Wis. Cathey is also survived by seven grandchildren, Terry (Ashlee) Robertson, Mary (Ryan) Salmon, Lorren Garrett, Jordan Garrett, Dakota Massie, Daniel Garrett, Ally Guthrie and a great-grandson, Rhett Salmon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dawn Marie Garrett and a brother, Robert Donnelly, Jr. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Cathey’s life at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at Blue Ridge Community Church with Pastor Todd Foster officiating. Michael Stephen Gross, 27 of Bedford, passed away on Thursday, April 20, 2017. He was born in Roanoke on October 9, 1989. Michael loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, hiking, reading and spending time with his family and friends. Michael is survived by his mom, Laura Saunders Hubschmitt and her husband, Doug of Vinton; father, William “Bill” Gross and wife, Kelly of Bedford; brother, David Austin Gross of Lynchburg; step brother, Jordan Arrington; step sisters, Brittney Arrington, Belinda Lancaster and Amanda Allison; maternal grandmother, Rachel Saunders; paternal grandparents, Austin Gross, Jr. and Iva Hawks Gross; two very special pets since childhood, Roxy and Cricket; also numerous aunts, uncles, special cousins and many friends. Michael was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Hugh Saunders. George “Buck” Alfred Arthur, Jr. 93, of Forest, VA, died Friday, April 21, 2017.  He was the husband of the late Jane Croft Arthur. Buck was born Thursday, August 2, 1923, in Bedford County, VA, son of the late George A. Arthur, Sr. and Maude Beatrice Arthur. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.   He retired from Commonwealth Oil Company where he was a contractor and attended North Bedford Baptist Church.  Buck was an accomplished musician who played in several bands including The Terrapin Mountain Boys Bluegrass Group, The Ole Timers, and The James River Five.  He was also a member of the Boonsboro Volunteer Fire Department, Big Island American Legion Post #217, and the Elks Lodge Lynchburg #321. Buck is survived by his sons:  Donald R. Arthur of Forest, VA, and Steven L. Arthur  (Carol) of Monroe, VA;  daughters: Carolyn A. Tyler (B.D.) of Madison Heights, VA and  Shirley A. Huffman (David) of Forest, VA; grandchildren: Jill, Lori, Brandon, Chad, Brian, Heather, Josh, Jessica; great-grandchildren: Riley, Camden, Skylin, Andrew, and Emmy.  Buck was predeceased by his son, Wayne Arthur; siblings: Maurice Arthur, Eva Arthur, and Leola Conner; and his son-in-law, Calvin Tyler. The family shares their special thanks and appreciation to the caregivers at the Odd Fellows Home, Runk & Pratt, and Seven Hills Hospice and to three very special and devoted friends: Francis Lewis, Jane Gross, and Martha Coleman. Catherine June Powell, 66, of Forest, Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 21, 2017. She was the loving wife of George Washington Powell for 36 years. Catherine was born Wednesday, January 17, 1951 in Lynchburg, VA. She was retired from Flowserve and Limitorque where she worked for many years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Christopher Todd Cordle; daughter-in-law, Alyson Cordle ; adoptive mother, Deloris Moon; brother, Berry Lewis Walden, Jr.; sister, Margaret Ann Walden Hall; grandchildren, Chelsea Ann Cordle, Christin Elisabeth Cordle, Christopher Todd Cordle, II; step-grandson, Joey Powell and his children, Joseph, Kayle, Gavin and Chance. Thomas Edward Morgan, also known as “Eddie” was called to his heavenly home quietly and peacefully on April 21, 2017. Born on December 30, 1923, Thomas was a son of the late James & Thalia Green Morgan. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Otelia Rainer, Thelma Daniel, Lerester Russell; and three brothers, Jack, Wallace, and Alexander Morgan. Thomas is survived by a son, Thomas E. Morgan, Jr, (Avis) of Appomattox; three daughters, Cynthia Morse (James), of Arrington, Va.,  Marjorie Jordan, of Madison Heights, and Joyce Parrish (Victor) of Madison Heights; two sisters-in-law, Delilah Jones and Gladys Morgan, of  Madison Heights; nine grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends. Donald Lee Hindman, 71, of Forest, VA, died Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at Virginia Baptist Hospital.  He was the loving husband of 49 years to Janice Elaine McCall Hindman. Donald was born Friday, June 15, 1945 in Seneca, South Carolina to the late William Stone Hindman and Frances Mays Hindman.  He attended high school in Walhalla, South Carolina followed by Clemson University and then he obtained his Ph. D. from Iowa State University.  He worked as a Research Engineer in the ceramic and nuclear industries.  He was retired from Babcock & Wilcox where he was a research engineer. In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Jonathan Lee Hindman and wife Julie, George Matthew Hindman and wife Catherine, two brothers Bill Hindman of Burlington, North Carolina and Larry Hindman of Walhalla, South Carolina, two grandsons, John Patrick Hindman and Andrew William Hindman of Lynchburg, Virginia, three granddaughters, Savannah Renee Hindman, Charlotte Wren Hindman of Virginia Beach, and Tabitha Hindman Huizinga of Houston, Texas, and many other relatives and friends.  Don loved his family and the Lord Jesus dearly. Fleshman, 81, of Lynchburg, VA, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017.  She was the wife of the late Roy Arlen Fleshman for 58 years Born Saturday, November 09, 1935 in Cullen, VA, Anne a daughter of the late James and Vola Metcalf. Anne is survived by a son, Bruce Wayne Fleshman and his wife, Connie, of Lynchburg, a daughter, Teresa Lynne Cartwright and her husband, Hythe, of Chesapeake, VA, five grandchildren: Will Cartwright and his wife, Rachel, of Lynchburg, Holly Cofer and her husband, Wayne, of Lynchburg, Rachel Fleshman and Harley Young, of Concord, Jared Hatcher and Sarah Tingen, of Clover, VA, and Mackenzie Fleshman, of Lynchburg; two  great granddaughters, Emersyn Hatcher, of Clover, VA, and Paisleigh Young, of Concord; two sisters, Janice Mann and her husband, William, of Chase City, VA, and Jeannie Neal, of Boydton, VA; a special group of friends, Donna Pritchard, Dhu Parsons, Janie Thorenson, and Barbara Guill; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Thomas Mallory Tucker, Sr.

Mr. Thomas Mallory Tucker, Sr., 89, died Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Mountain View, the family home in Lowesville. He was born December 17, 1927, also at Mountain View, to the late Walter Lowrie and Janice Thomas Tucker. He returned to Mountain View in 1981 and appreciated being able to care for the home in which he spent his formative years. He was a kind, loyal and gentle-hearted man whose devotion and integrity was an inspiration to his family and friends. Mr. Tucker graduated from Temperance High School and was a member of the Class of ‘48B of Virginia Military Institute, where he earned a BS in Civil Engineering. After teaching physical education at Amherst County High School for a year, he returned to Mountain View to form a partnership with his father and pursue his passion for operating the family farm and orchards. Upon Mr. Tucker’s retirement, his son, Bill, subsequently took over the farming operations. Mr. Tucker represented Erie Family Life Insurance Company for 30 years, and was a lifelong member of Ivy Hill United Methodist Church of the Mount Pleasant Charge, the Temperance Ruritan Club for more than 60 years, the Virginia Farm Bureau, and the Winton Country Club and the “Shut Up and Deal” bridge clubs. In addition to playing bridge, his hobbies included golf, reading, investing in the stock market, and watching college football and basketball games. In addition to his parents, Mr. Tucker was preceded in death by his wives Geraldine (Jerry) Martin Tucker and Mary Phipps Tucker, and his brother, Walter Lowrie Tucker, Jr. Mr. Tucker is survived by his sister, Alice Lewis Johnson of Charlottesville, sister-in-law, Henrietta (Holly) Martin of Callands, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Don and Pat Pafford of Amherst County, and his children Mike and Beth Gamble, Bill and Claudia Tucker, and Preston and Martha Tucker all of Amherst County, Martha (Marty) and Rick Dyke of Rio Rancho, NM, Tom and Krista Tucker of Warrenton, Meredith Tucker Lindel of Winston-Salem, NC, Mark Gamble of Canonsburg, PA, fifteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. The family is grateful for the kindness and devotion of Gloria Mays, Linda Richerson and Shane Shelton in assisting Mr. Tucker in recent times. Esther Mae Almond Foster, 91, of Lynchburg, VA, entered into her eternal reward Thursday, April 27, 2017. The second child of the late Eddie M. and Mary Anderson Almond, she was born May 21, 1925 in Greenbrier County, WV. A 1942 graduate of Brookville High School, she worked at the Pentagon during World War II. She was employed at Craddock-Terry Shoe Corporation for several years. Mae is survived by her husband of 72 years, Warren M. Foster; her daughter Sherrilyn K. Foster of Lynchburg; her son Richard W. Foster, M.D. and his wife, K. Kambitsis Foster of Baton Rouge, LA; her grandchildren Nicholas Kambitsis Foster, Katherine Almond Foster Klein, and Stephanie Matiatos Foster Hanson; her brother Lowell T. “Tommy” Almond and his wife, Doris; her great-grandchildren Tucker Alexander Foster, George Foster Klein, and Richard Nicklaus Foster; as well as several nephews, nieces, and great nephews and great nieces. She is preceded in death by her sisters Dove A. Bibb and Peggy A. Lewis and her brothers Clarence E. Almond and W. Hoskins Almond. Robert “Bobby” B. Rosser born June 15, 1947 in Tampa, FL passed away April 28, 2017 at his home in Huddleston.  He was preceded in death by his sons, Kevin W. St. Clair and Dustin B. Rosser. Virginia Marion Goodwin Scott, 94, of Bedford, passed away on Friday, April 28, 2017 at Cardinal Senior Community.  She was the wife of the late Robert Archibald Scott, Jr. Born March 20, 1923 in New Britain, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Dr. Allie Jesse Goodwin, and Marion Williams Goodwin. Virginia had a great appreciation for music. She was a member of the Friday Book Club, and she was on the original historical board of Avenel. Virginia was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Virginia is survived by her daughter: Lynn Scott of Bedford; son: David Scott of Chesterfield; nieces: Martha Babb Griffin and husband, Jim of Winchester; Laura Babb Hockett and husband, Jeff of Tulsa, Ok, and their sons, Evan and Aaron; and her cousin: Earle Goodwin of Bedford. A graveside service will be held at noon on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 in Greenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Kay Waff officiating.
